Pokemon Master: How does the battle system work?

Pokémon Masters was released on August 29, 2019 on iOS and Android and introduces all-new strategic gameplay.

The combat system

Unlike previous Pokémon games, the battle system is based on real time rather than turn-based. As the battle progresses, your attack gauge (per Pokémon) increases and when it is full, you can choose an attack from one of your Pokémon. Each Pokémon can have up to 4 moves.

Each Pokémon attack requires a certain amount of Energy. You can increase this energy gauge twice in exchange for coins.

As a Trainer, you are a support for your Pokémon. You can therefore heal them or increase their stats. In Pokémon Masters, everything works by Duo. You can find our list of Duos in this article.

How to recruit Trainers?

To be able to play a Pokémon and send it into battle, you must recruit its associated Trainer. Pokémon Masters being a free to play, you will have to buy some kind of Summoning Cards using your Porygophone. You will then randomly receive a Duo. In the scenario mode, you can also unlock Trainers by completing certain quests.

How to increase your stats?

A few minutes after launching the game and completing your first quests, you will unlock the ability to train your Pokémon.

You must then go to Bonus Zones to obtain different objects all useful for increasing your units. Among these objects, you will find Sodas of three colors (Red, Blue and Green), reinforcement manuals or even Motivations. These are the objects that allow you to increase the statistics of your Pokémon.

Special attacks: Duo abilities and Synchro attacks

Much like the Z Crystals in the main license, the Pokémon here have special attacks thanks to their links with their Trainer:

  • Duo Abilities: Used to use a special ability like Mega Evolution
  • Synchro Attacks: New attacks that can only be used when playing in co-op (with a friend)
