The portable console of the 90s was, without a doubt, the game boy from Nintendo. This console was a sales success, especially with the arrival of the Pokémon game saga, which revitalized its sales. In addition, it is the console with the most accessories and peripherals of history, and we are going to tell you the rarer and some even disturbing.
Many of us have had a childhood that combined playing soccer or whatever in the park, and playing Pokémon Red and Blue with the Game Boy. In addition, we could fight each other thanks to the Game Link cable, a genius of Nintendo that the Pokémon games exploited very well.
Something very interesting about the Game Boy is that it had the ability to integrate a large number of additional accessories. The most “common” was a printer, a camera or a flashlight for playing at night, since it lacked backlighting. But, there were others much more extravagant, some would be totally incorrect today and one especially disturbing.
Glucoboy
This add-on was created for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance, without a doubt, it was quite interesting. It is a device for diabetic children that was used to monitor blood glucose levels. As it was used, different mini-games were unlocked.
You should know that this device did not last long on the market. It was not a bad product, the problem was that Bayer bought the game, the patent and withdrew it from the market. An explanation has never been given in this regard, but it could clearly have to do with the money they could lose with this game.
Pocket Sonar
Fishing in Japan is more than just a leisure activity, it is something more of worship and culture. Nintendo for the original Game Boy launched the Pocket Sonar device to the Japanese market. It is nothing more than a small sonar that sends pulses, allowing you to see what is around you.
It was a device, as you can imagine, designed to help the little ones fish. Its operation was simple: you threw the device into the water and you could see if there were fish nearby. Theoretically, this device facilitated the task of fishing, finding the most ideal place for this practice.
Sewing Machine
Now let’s go with a device that, if launched on the market today, would generate bitter controversy. The Sewing Machine is a special sewing machine that connected to the Game Boy. It had a large number of different patterns and options, designed for young people and adults who wanted to sew.
Possibly, this device would not have been developed today. If it had been created, it would surely have been quickly branded as sexist and perpetuated gender roles.
WorkBoy
The Game Boy is a console that was born from the Game & Watch. The latter, in turn, is an idea of Gumpei Yokoi when he returned home from work and saw a man in a suit playing with his digital calculator. Well, the WorkBoy turns the console into a kind of PDA, somehow closing the circle.
This curious device turned the game console into an electronic agenda. It had calendar, calculator and even currency converter functions. The pity about this solution is that it was never officially launched on the market, it remained more like a prototype.
PediSedate
Without a doubt, it is the most disturbing complement to the Game Boy or any console we can imagine. This device was developed to help sedate children in a calmer manner. It was connected to the console and while the child played, the device released the sedative that was inhaled by the child.
We must emphasize that this disconcerting device never went on sale, it was only a prototype. The number of units that were created for demonstration and what happened to them is completely unknown.
