For once, the players can breathe. The PlayStation 5 Pro hit the shelves today with availability that’s great to see. Gone are the days of orchestrated shortages and prices inflated by scalpers.

Available from most major resellers (Amazon, Fnac, Boulanger) at the recommended price of €799.99, the console is not subject to any bidding wars. A situation which contrasts radically with the launch of the special gray 30th anniversary edition, which fetched more than €3,000 on resale sites.

On the other hand, the optional disk drive poses a problem. Theoretically sold for €120, it is available to subscribers either absent or offered at prohibitive prices of around €250 on resale sites. Hopefully this shortage will not last several months.

A less rosy reality for Sony

This generous availability perhaps hides a less rosy reality for Sony. The first tests are unanimous: to really benefit from the improvements of the PS5 Pro, in particular the improved ray-tracing mode and 4K rendering at high framerates, you absolutely must have a high-end HDMI 2.1 compatible television, ideally equipped with a 4K 120 Hz screen with VRR.

It’s the day the PS5 Pro is released: some e-retailers are lowering the price a little or offering accessories for the purchase of the Sony console

A significant investment which is added to the €799.99 of the console. This technical entry barrier could explain the relative ease of obtaining the console: apart from the wealthiest or most tech-savvy players, who really needs this PS5 Pro?
