Avowed will be capped at 30fps on Xbox Series X|S consoles, but its art director doesn’t think that’s an issue in a single-player first-person game.
Avowed has been one of the stars of Microsoft’s crop this year at Gamescom. Though naturally overshadowed by the likes of Indiana Jones, Obsidian’s RPG will be one of the first big games to come out next year.
Although it was planned for this year, it was delayed to February 18, 2025, not for technological reasons, but so as not to “stack” the fall release schedule on Xbox Series X|S, which in a few weeks will include Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Black Ops 6, STALKER 2 and finally Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on December 9.
Despite this, although the Gamescom demo was very popular with attendees, the game will not reach 60 fps on console, but rather will be limited to 30 fps. Whether you play on Xbox Series X or Series S.
In an interview on the Iron Lords podcast, Avowed art director Matt Hansen said they’re aiming for the game to run at 30 frames per second (via Eurogamer).
“It’s a first-person, single-player game, and you don’t necessarily need 60 frames per second.“, says.
“This allows us to get a lot more out of the visual effects, lighting and all that. It’s a commitment we decided to make relatively early on, and we’re very happy with it.“.
“The game is very fluid for how visually dense it is, and that was our goal.“, he says. Below you can see a new 30-minute gameplay of Avowed from Gamescom.
Avowed joins the list of Xbox games running at 30fps… though many received patches later
Microsoft has only shown the Xbox console version, but on PC the framerate should not be limited to 60 fps. Many fans will wonder if it is, again, the “burden” of making an Xbox Series S version the one that prevents Avowed from running at 60fps on consoles…
The same thing happened with Starfield, but eight months later it received an update that finally allowed for higher fps on consoles. Even Redfall received a 60fps patch on consoles, will the same happen with Avowed?
At the moment, Obsidian has two or three more months of development to Avowed which they didn’t count on at the beginning, but it doesn’t seem like improving the game’s performance is a priority. But, with how visually dense they say it is, maybe it’s not necessary…
