“A Great Rune has been broken”: What the hell does this message from Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree mean and what implications does it have?

Beyond the final bosses and certain secrets, there is one event in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree that has puzzled many players since the DLC was released. At a certain point in the adventure, a message suddenly appears on our screen.

“Somewhere, a Great Rune has broken.” Sounds important enough to worry about, but most of us had no idea what it meant… and that was a problem. What does this Elden Ring DLC event mean? What are the consequences of seeing it on screen? Its activation is not random. It happens when you reach the Shadow Fortress or Ruins of Rauh, or by following the path to the Bone Village.

This video game with an unpronounceable name promises to fulfill one of my greatest dreams: to shoot a huge artillery cannon

If you are interested in the story of the DLC, I recommend exploring as much as possible and making sure you have all your relationships with NPCs (conversations) updated before moving forward in the marked directions. Why? Here comes a little spoiler: The message means that Miquella has abandoned her Great Rune to become a true god. This has three effects on the world:

Elden Message
Elden Message

Shadow Fortress (north), Rauh Ruins (west) and Bone Village (southeast)

  • The Great Rune of Miquella is accessible to us. If you want it, you must defeat the Avatar of the Shadow Tree, which you can find at the base of the Shadow Tree, located in the northern area of the Shadow Fortress.
  • “And an enchantment has been lifted,” the second part of the message reads. This implies that the seal on the Rift, located in the southernmost part of the Shadow Realm, has been opened and is now an accessible area.
  • All allied NPCs’ quests progresswhich means their locations will change and they will no longer be where you met them.

Contrary to what it seems, the message does not predict the end of the world or the beginning of a time trial. It is just the DLC’s way of pointing out certain important changes in the world. This is not new, FromSoftware did something similar after defeating Radahn, Scourge of the Stars during the base experience.
