It’s a tradition in games to make us lose against an overpowered boss, in order to allow us to take a revenge as well deserved as satisfying. But Black Myth: Wukong changes this recipe a little, since Erlang is never encountered during the rest of the adventure. In reality, he awaits you in the best-guarded secret area of the game, you will have to deserve it if you wish to face him again, and even more to beat him.
Prerequisites
Before you can say hello to Erlang, you must unlock all of the game’s secret areas and defeat their respective bosses.
- Chapter 1: Ring the 3 bells and defeat Elder Jinchi.
- Chapter 2: Complete the Warthog quest, then defeat Fuban.
- Chapter 3: Complete the Treasure Hunter quest.
- Chapter 4: Defeat Daoist Venom twice to gain access to Violet Cloud Mountain, before defeating Twilight Veil.
- Chapter 5: Complete the Bull quest, before beating the Golden Eyed Beast Bushui.
- Reach Chapter 6.
It is highly recommended to gather the last of Wukong’s relics in Chapter 6, before going to fight Erlang. This involves collecting his 4 pieces of armor and his staff. You should also complete the Skandhas quest. Finding all the Meditation Sites and killing all the bosses except the very last one is highly recommended.
Chapter 3 Secret Area
This might surprise you, but Chapter 3 does have a secret area, in addition to Chen Loong’s Zodiac Village. You may have already found its entrance, it is the Great Pagodawhich even has a dedicated Altar. Its entrance is located between the exit of the Pagoda Prison, and the temple in which the old Chinese master teaches you the spell of Circle of Flames, that is to say before the turtle. Go to the left of the area, until you reach a fairly empty area, with a portal located between statues.
If you enter the area during Chapter 3, there is nothing to do there. But by fulfilling the prerequisites listed above, the central wall will automatically trigger a cutscene. You will then be teleported to the secret area where Erlang and his friends await you.
Fight against Erlang, the sacred deity
This guide is not intended to detail how to defeat Erlang, but here are some additional tips:
- If you use a transformation power, Erlang will transform into a tiger. If he hits you, it will force you to return to your normal form instantly. This explains the events of the introduction. In any case, choose a form that can dodge. After landing a few hits, Erlang will return to his normal form, allowing you to use your transformation normally.
- Now is the time to use all your special consumables, such as the pill that boosts all your stats, as well as the one that can bring you back to life in combat after a death. Be careful though, their effect is not that long, it is better to use the second one during the fight, when the situation becomes desperate.
Four Heavenly Kings
After defeating Erlang, the fight follows the formula of a Power Rangers episode. You become giants, and a titanic clash ensues. The first step is to defeat the 4 Heavenly Kings seen in the game’s intro. One against four seems difficult, but there will usually be no more than one or two attacking you at a time. Counter the attacks with Rock Form, accumulate Focus Points, then use the Charged Heavy Attack with 3+ points to recover all your health.
Erlang Shen
Finally, you will face Erlang in his monstrous form, during a section that is also reminiscent of King Kong vs Godzilla. The formula is the same as against the 4 Heavenly Kings. Use the rock form to parry the attacks, then heal yourself with a powerful attack. You will probably have to dodge the attacks too, while you recover your cooldown.
Awards
In addition to the extra pages in the journal, which is nice for trophies, you will receive the Azure Dome, the ultimate transformation, that of the Stone Monkey. You will also receive the Double Bladed Trident StaffErlang’s weapon. It allows you to adopt a fighting style based on the spear, rather than on stick blows.
