4 Tips from Nepal Rastra Bank to Avoid Online Scams

With the increasing digitalization of daily life in Nepal, online scams have become a growing concern. Recent reports indicate that many individuals have lost substantial amounts of money due to internet-based fraud schemes. These scams are particularly alarming given the rise in mobile and internet banking across the country.

Common Types of Online Scams

  • Phishing: Fake emails or messages that trick users into providing sensitive information.
  • Investment Scams: Scams involving fake investment opportunities in cryptocurrency, forex, etc.
  • Lottery Scams: Messages falsely informing victims they’ve won a prize.
  • Romance Scams: Scammers trick victims into giving money through fake romantic relationships.

Scammers often target individuals through phishing emails, pretending to be legitimate businesses or financial institutions. These emails ask for sensitive information like bank details, which can then be used to steal money.

With the widespread use of the internet, incidents of online scams are on the rise in Nepal. Nepal Rastra Bank has urged the general public to exercise special caution to avoid falling victim to such fraud.

The bank has noted that platforms like WhatsApp, Messenger, Viber, Telegram, and SMS have become the main tools used by scammers. These fraudsters often send fake messages such as “You have won an expensive mobile or gold prize,” to steal your personal and financial details.

Scammers may also offer investment opportunities in cryptocurrency, forex, or online betting, promising quick wealth. However, the real intent behind these offers is to steal your bank account information and personal data.

To stay safe, follow these tips:

  • Ignore messages from unknown people: Do not trust messages or calls from unfamiliar numbers or individuals.
  • Verify the message’s authenticity: Even if a message comes from someone you know, always confirm its validity, especially if it requests financial help.
  • Be extra cautious: Do not immediately respond to messages on platforms like WhatsApp or Messenger.
  • Never share personal details: Always be careful when sharing your bank account or personal information online.
  • Don’t fall for attractive offers: Be aware of investment schemes that promise large returns in a short period.

Nepal Rastra Bank has urged the public to be more cautious when conducting financial transactions and to pay special attention to staying safe from scams.

What to Do If You Are Scammed?

  • Report the scam to the police authorities and the bank.
  • Change all passwords immediately.
  • Monitor bank and credit card statements for unauthorized transactions.

If you suspect you’ve been scammed, immediately report the incident to Nepal Police’s cybercrime unit and notify your bank to freeze any suspicious transactions. Quick action can often prevent further loss.
