AMD formalizes its Ryzen 7 9800X3D. Succeeding the 7800X3D, already considered the best gaming processor on the market, this new chip promises 8% more performance and finally accessible overclocking.
After the Intel Arrow Lake series (including the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K), it’s AMD’s turn to release its Ryzen 7 9800X3D.
479 dollars to revolutionize PC gaming? This is AMD’s bet with its new Ryzen 7 9800X3D. The big announcement? AMD placed the 3D cache under the die rather than on top. We explain everything to you.
The placement of the V-Cache under the die?
Placing the V-Cache under the die is more than just a cosmetic change. This architectural modification significantly improves processor cooling, an essential point for performance.
Indeed, by bringing the core complex (CCD) closer to the cooling solution, AMD allows its chip to maintain higher frequencies for longer.
This new approach also allows, for the first time on an X3D processor, complete overclocking. A step forward when we know that previous generations were locked due to thermal constraints linked to the placement of the V-Cache. Overclocking enthusiasts will finally be able to push their processor beyond the factory limits.
Performance that keeps its promises?
AMD announces an average improvement of 8% in gaming performance compared to the previous generation. A figure that may seem modest, but which hides much larger gains on certain stocks. Star Wars Outlawsfor example, saw its performance jump by double digits.
Even more interesting, the 9800X3D significantly improves minimum performance (1% low), a crucial aspect for in-game fluidity. The Last of Us: Part 1minimum framerates are 31% higher than the competition, promising a more stable gaming experience.
Characteristics and positioning
With his 8 cores and 16 threads based on the Zen 5 architecture, the 9800X3D displays impressive frequencies: 4.7 GHz in base and 5.2 GHz in boost. Figures never seen on an X3D chip, made possible by the new cache placement. The TDP of 120 Watts remains reasonableand the 104 MB of total cache promise exceptional gaming performance.
Sold at $479, or $30 more than its predecessor at launch, the 9800X3D is clearly positioned in the premium segment.
A price that may seem high, but which remains competitive with Intel solutions, especially since the processor promises up to 40% more performance on certain titles like Far Cry 6 Or Cyberpunk 2077.
