It can’t be said that Sorcerers are spoiled in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree, since the number of new Incantations is 28, against only 14 new Sorceries. There are about a hundred new weapons, but only 2 staves. However, this does not mean that everything is to be thrown away. After the best Weapons, Ashes of War and Talismans, here are what we consider to be the best Sorceries.
Impenetrable thorns
Right now, the best Sorcery in the DLC, if not the game, is hands down Impenetrable Thorns. It finally gives Sorcerers a viable way to trigger ranged bleeds. It’s a pretty effective spell against groups of enemies, but it really shines against bosses. With a Thorn Sorcerer Build, it’s possible to kill a boss by casting it a handful of times, since a devastating bleed will be triggered each time. We killed the fearsome Commander Gaius in a matter of seconds with it. On the downside, this spell requires a fairly high Faith score, rather than Intelligence. It also requires a high Esoteric score, in order to exploit its full potential.
Position : This spell can be found on a hidden platform below, after crossing the room by walking on the statues, on the sixth floor of the Black Castle Seed Warehouse.
Trio of Laméclats
Laméclats is one of the most effective and popular sorceries in the base game, we can only be happy to see a slightly more powerful version being introduced in the DLC. It is unfortunately not three times more powerful, but it is still a notable gain in damage, both on the life and posture of the enemies. It is a very flexible spell, since it allows to deceive the AI of enemies capable of dodging. It is also possible to charge the spell before having a significant delay on its launch, which allows to launch a volley of spells at the same time on a poor enemy who did not see anything coming.
Position : In the second part of Ensis Castle, climb up onto the roofs via a ladder. You will be able to jump onto a small platform below, with a corpse having the spell in its possession. It is located near the Knightess of Caria with the great sword.
Stone blades
If there is one thing that sorcerers were missing, it is another spell capable of inflicting physical damage. The Sling is almost useless in tight spaces like a corridor for example. This spell attacks from below, and by charging it, it will even follow the enemy a little for a certain distance. It is capable of inflicting heavy physical damage, with balance damage, and the Meteoric Staff will reinforce its damage.
Position : This is one of the possible rewards in exchange for the Commander Gaius boss’s souvenir. You will find it behind the Black Castle.
Fleeting microcosm
Another particularly interesting spell, it makes a black sphere appear above the enemy, the first impulse will inflict damage, then after a moment, the explosion will hit a large area, doing quite a bit of damage. The range of the spell is quite good, it appears directly on the targeted position, ignoring obstacles, and the enemies don’t even seem to react to its presence. This makes it an effective and economical spell in almost all situations.
Position : You can buy it from Count Ymir in Manus Metyr Cathedral, after ringing the second bell.
Gravitational projectile
Gravity-based spells are really appealing. As the name suggests, the gravitational wave will release a mini black hole over a fairly large area. It will regularly pull enemies towards it, which will make them stumble, it can even propel them, depending on their size. Eventually, the black hole will explode, inflicting quite significant damage.
This is a useful spell against a horde of small enemies, or even against humanoid enemies, and it offers a notable control tool to Sorcerers. It is, however, full of limitations. Its range is very short, you can only have one at a time, and heavy enemies will completely ignore its influence.
Position : Obtained by killing the Star Creature, at the very north of the continent. Just before reaching the second sacred ruin of Ymir.
Unfortunately, all the other Sorceries don’t bring much new or usable to the table. The biggest disappointment is probably Rellana’s Twin Moons Sorcery, which is pretty much unusable. It has no hyperarmor during casting, its range is ridiculously short, and its damage is miserable for such an expensive and demanding spell.
