It was one of the most anticipated releases of the year, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. After breaking Steam pre-download records 2 days before its release, Black Myth Wukong broke everything on its passage yesterday during its launch.

With broken records and super-positive reviews, we may have the real first competitor to FF7 Rebirth for game of the year?

Black Myth Wukong Blows Everything Up Upon Release

Within the first few hours of Black Myth Wukong’s release, the game reached peak 2.2 million concurrent players on Steam. An absolutely insane figure that makes the game:

  • The 2nd game with the highest number of simultaneous players of all time after PUBG,
  • The single-player game with the highest number of concurrent players of all time, shattering Cyberpunk 2077’s previous record of ~1 million.

Crazy statistics for a single-player game at a high price (€59.99), which allowed itself the luxury of passing the monsters Palworld and Counter-Strike 2 on Steam. The players’ reviews are also very positive, whether in the comments of the various posts on the networks, or directly on Steam, where the game already has 96% “extremely positive” reviews with over 130,000 reviews!

Black Myth Wukong is a real bomb that has just landed in the video game landscape, and it’s nice to see that China is now able to compete with Japan and the West regarding the development of quality AAA!

A success largely driven by China

Being based on Chinese mythology and the tales of the Monkey King Sun Wukong, it is no surprise that the game’s major area of focus is China. However, we may not have expected these numbers to be so great.

By herself, China accounts for about 88.1% players or at least people interested in the game. The United States is behind at only 3%, then Hong Kong, Japan, and then the rest of the world. This therefore partly explains the enormous success of the game, driven by an entire people determined to break all records!

After Stellar Blade, which brought South Korea among the major single-player video game developing countries, Black Myth Wukong brought China into the big leagues and that’s a great thing for the industry. We can’t wait to see the future projects that China has in store for us, some of which already promise to be very big, like Phantom Blade Zero Or Ballad of Antara planned for 2025.
