Black Myth: Wukong is very different from FromSoftware’s Souls, but it’s not without some important similarities either. Altars are at the top of the list in this area. In a game without a map, they are the main hideouts available to find items, secrets, and bosses hidden throughout.
Contrary to what we have become accustomed to, interacting with a Guardian Altar will not automatically regenerate your character and make enemies respawn. You must select the “Rest” line to do this. This is useful when you are exploring the area.
Respect for sparks
One of the most useful features of the Altars is the ability to reset your sparks at will. This is a good way to review your build before a tricky boss. Select the “Advancement” line and then “Rekindle Sparks”.
Shop
At the beginning of the game, there are only a few remedies in the altar shop, but this will change over time. It is advisable to check the altar shop in each chapter, as well as in special locations, as their wares change. Later, they will contain unique enhancement materials, as well as components required to gain permanent bonuses. Even the remedies and ingredients are worth checking out, as they are often available in very limited quantities in the game. You will probably be happy to have them on hand during the game’s final bosses.
Craft
Later, Altars allow you to craft weapons and armor and even upgrade your spirits. Starting in Chapter 2, Chien Xu will even teach you how to craft basic remedies from an altar, once you bring him his recipes.
Fast travel
Dying automatically returns you to the last altar used, but you can also use the Incense Trail Talisman in your inventory, in order to teleport there at the speed of one loading time. Let’s specify that it costs nothing, do not hesitate to use it.
As mentioned above, in addition to being very useful for fast travel, Altars serve as landmarks in each chapter. They make it easier to find hidden objects, and serve as a starting point. In many cases, they are also the only way to return to certain areas.
You may have noticed, but a special icon appears on the destination list when an NPC is in the area. This will help you easily find merchants like Monkey Shen and Chien Xu.
List of altars
Here is a complete list of the altars of each chapter. You can use an interactive map to help you find them. Be aware that the game does not leave you completely unprepared in your search for the Altars. When there is one nearby, a sort of golden line will appear on the screen, with a characteristic sound. You just have to follow it.
