Black Myth Wukong Smashes 4-Year-Old Steam Record Held by Cyberpunk 2077 Before Its Release

It’s finally the big day! Black Myth Wukong is finally out and it’s time to dive in and find out if the hype surrounding the game’s release was deserved or not. But until today, Game Science’s Chinese “souls-like” was so anticipated that it broke a crazy record on Steampreviously held by Cyberpunk 2077, arguably the most anticipated game of all time before its (missed) release in December 2020.

Steam Bandwidth Explosion

There are many indicators that can be used to determine whether a game is likely to be popular when it comes out. Engagement on social networks, number of pre-orders, reviews by critics… But there is also another lesser-known indicator: the amount of bandwidth used on the platforms the game is pre-downloaded on a few days before its release.

Cyberpunk 2077 had exploded that of Steam at the end of 2020 with a record peak at 51TB (terabytes) per second on December 12, 2020, due to the extreme number of players pre-downloading the game. A record that has just been shattered Black Myth: Wukongsince these pre-downloads that started the day before yesterday had a huge record peak at more than 70TB/san absolutely enormous number.

The majority of this bandwidth usage came from Asia (59.3TB), followed by America (7.8TB) and finally Europe (7.6TB). It is important to note that all of these figures take into account the bandwidth of all games on steam and not just Black Myth Wukong, and that the game requires more space on your hard drive (130GB) compared to Cyberpunk 2077 at the time (70GB). Nevertheless, these numbers remain astronomical and largely linked to our new monkey star.

A candidate for GOTY?

Black Myth: Wukong is one of the most anticipated games of the year and could claim the top title at the end of the year. Despite a critics’ score of 82/100 on Metacritic for the moment and the first controversial tests, we are waiting to see the official version come out and the opinion of the players in order to get a better idea.

It remains nevertheless complicated to see it beat the ogre Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, clearly the favorite to be elected game of the year next December. Can it be nominated however alongside games like Stellar Blade, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Tekken 8 and many other good surprises of this year? The future will tell us but you, what was your GOTY so far this year?
