Combat in Hogwarts Legacy: How to parry to stun enemies and dodge powerful attacks

Mastering combat in Hogwarts Legacy is elementary for any self-respecting wizard or witch. The offensive part is no mystery: press the quick attack button, cast spells and break spells. I protect of enemies according to their color. The defensive part is usually the most complicated, despite all the help that the game offers us.

Below I’ll tell you everything you need to know about the Protego spell, how to use parry, how to stun enemies with Stun, and when to choose between blocking and dodging.

On the defensive at Hogwarts Legacy

The spells I protect and Fainting These are not learned in class, but rather from Professor Fig during the first few minutes of the game. Don’t underestimate them, because when used correctly they are just as powerful as those you learn from other teachers. First of all, you should keep in mind the visual warnings that appear above your head, indicating that you are about to receive an attack. Your ability to react and chain attacks will be vital to keep up with the pace of the fight.

Let’s start with the defensive spell Protego and its two versions:

  • I protect: This is the most basic version of blocking. Press the Protect button to prevent the spell from dealing damage to you and apply effects like Levioso.
  • Protect + counterattack (parry): If you perform Protego at the exact right moment (just before receiving the attack) and hold the button, then you will counterattack your enemy by breaking their Protego shield, provided it is activated, and you cast Stun and your enemies suffer a slight stun that leaves them out of combat for a few seconds.

This is the easy part and what it tells you Hogwarts Legacy in their tutorials… but there’s more. During combat, you can use Protego + counterattack with spells coming from any direction. You don’t need look at your attacker to repel the attack.

On the other hand, you must look at the enemy to to cast Stun. When you cast Protego, quickly turn the camera towards the enemy you want, cast Protego, then back to the enemy you want to damage. you will quickly incapacitate an enemy and you can continue fighting with one less thing to worry about. You can also cast it on whoever you were damaging before receiving the attack.

Now, there are two types of notices: Orange and Red. You can perform Protego with the orange attacks. Red signal attacks cannot be blocked and you must use Equive/Dash to avoid them.

  • If you get hit, you will lose more life than normal.
  • If you are fast enough, you can cut off red or powerful attacks through Stun, spells with effects like Levioso, and/or throwing objects at the attacker. Remember the unwritten law of Dark Souls: the bigger, the slower and easier to dodge.

In any case, the key is keep up the pace in combat and not mash the attack and spell casting button. I recommend practicing to measure the keystrokes when casting spells, so you can block, execute parries and dodge to continue launching attacks. If you wear helmets, you will be able to listen better when he is going to attack youespecially if the enemy is not in your line of sight.
