Currently it is extremely common for any device to incorporate online functions, and it is normal considering that it is absolutely necessary in most cases to be able to access everything it is capable of offering. But there was a time when this was not the case, and the older consoles did not have an internet connection, since they did not need it either, but there was one that managed to completely change this, the first console who introduced the online game.
One of the main factors that has managed to evolve the video game industry is the fact of being able to play with anyone around the world to a title that allows more than one user to integrate, online games have become without any place doubt in one of the great inventions created for leisure of the current era. But this trajectory obviously had a beginning, and it’s really not as far away as we might imagine, since as such, online games that use an internet connection are no more than 25 years old.
This was the first console to allow users to play online
It is normal that we often have doubts about how something came about, and in general online gaming has gone through several stages to evolve to what we currently have, since as such, it was thanks to personal computers that we currently have this type of titles. But as we can imagine, a computer and a console are systems that are different in several aspects, mainly due to the fact that consoles are created specifically to be able to play, while a PC has many more uses in addition to this.
The first model that managed to offer online gaming was nothing more and nothing less than the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis)but it was not the one that managed to integrate as such a component that allowed it to directly access online services. This is mainly due to the fact that at that time this type of multiplayer game was very primitive, so there was no real need to completely change the structure of a console to be able to introduce a modem that would allow it to connect to the Internet, so I did it. What Sega did was sell it as a separate accessory in 1988.
But it was not until the years 1998-2000 that a model arrived that truly incorporated online functions, allowing users to directly access multiplayer mode via the Internet without having to purchase a device that allowed the connection. And the console that really managed to introduce online gaming as a standard was the Dreamcast, which was called the first internet-ready console worldwide, and which represented the beginning of what we know as the era of online video games.
Although Sega has not manufactured consoles for years, it will always be a company remembered for all the advances they made, being one of the companies that managed to lead the way for video games to reach their current state.
