EigenLayer strengthens EigenDA security against Sybil attacks

EigenLayer has implemented an enhanced security feature for the EigenDA data availability service on the Ethereum mainnet to prevent Sybil* and distributed denial of service (DDoS)* attacks. This security measure uses a whitelist, which can authenticate access using internet protocol (IP) addresses or Ethereum’s ECDSA authentication.

ECDSA authentication is a cryptographic method of verifying the identity of a user, device, or system based on the principle of public key cryptography; uses elliptic curve cryptography to ensure secure authentication.

The purpose of this security enhancement is to protect EigenDA services while ensuring that they remain available to those users, devices or organizations that are legally authorized to access and use the services. permission. This is important because EigenDA has significant potential, such as providing a free service tier with up to 768 kilobytes of throughput per 10-minute window, far exceeding the needs of most applications on Ethereum, including rollups like Base which are in full swing.

Additionally, EigenDA provides flexibility for partners who may require increased throughput beyond the free service tier, suitable for use cases that require high throughput. The service can handle aggregate loads of up to 0.6 megabytes per second and achieve peak throughput of up to 10 MB per second on the Ethereum mainnet.

Going forward, EigenLayer will also roll out permissionless payment features for blob throughput on EigenDA, scheduled for release in late 2024. This feature will allow users to reserve bandwidth at a rate. Fixed pricing to support scenarios requiring high throughput.

EigenLayer’s efforts go beyond security and capacity and include completing the EIGEN token distribution phases, with plans to expand through staking and delegation activities through the portal EigenLayer web. Since launching on the Ethereum mainnet in April 2024, EigenLayer has attracted over 12 billion USD in deposits, a testament to its rapid growth and adoption in the blockchain ecosystem.

*Sybil attack usually involves one user creating multiple fake accounts to receive multiple tokens in an airdrop. This can happen when there are not strong enough protections to prevent the creation of fake accounts or when the criteria for receiving airdrops are not strictly established.

*Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack is a type of cyber attack that aims to make an online service no longer available to users by overloading the system, server or network. its. This is typically done by sending a large number of requests from infected or remotely controlled computers or network devices, making it impossible for the target service to handle all requests from the user. valid use.
