Like its predecessors, Elden Ring has marked with its tortuous and unintuitive quests. As one might expect (or hope), the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC offers several linked quest lines, the objectives of which are often difficult to grasp.
Quest of Dane Mortefeuille, the warrior monk
Normally, you will start this quest after killing Rellana, the knight of the twin moons. A moon of Miquella is located near the exit, with Leda, one of her companions and most importantly: the Monk’s Letterto be picked up from the ground.
You may not have noticed, but an emote is unlocked at the same time: “May the best man win.”
By going to the items menu, you can find that the monk is meeting you in the East. He also asks you to communicate with your fists, not with words.
Warrior Monk Position
It is advisable to go and pick up the Area Map Fragment. Then go a little to theEastDane Mortefeuille is located near another Moon of Miquella. He is the Warrior Monk. If you talk to him, he will give you the same answer as the famous Golden Mask. As he specified in his message, he does not want to communicate with words.
How to communicate with Dane Mortefeuille?
There is no point in attacking him, even punching him doesn’t work. It will just make Dane disappear. Luckily, if you make a mistake, you can make him respawn by using the nearby Fainted Grace site. The solution is actually very simple, just use theemote obtained with his message: “May the best man win“It actually involves communicating with one’s fists by performing a form of Asian martial salute.
Boss Dane Mortefeuille
After performing the emote in front of Dane, you will be teleported to a special arena. After a few moments, the fight begins. As you might expect, he is a martial arts expert, he uses his fists and feet to kick your ass. You should especially be wary of his short-range special ability, an energy discharge. When he focuses his energies on his fist, interrupt his animation, or move away. He is not a particularly formidable boss, his life bar is also quite limited. Like all humanoid bosses, you can tackle him to the ground to inflict heavy damage while he gets back up.
Awards
After you win, you will automatically return to the world map. You can pick up the Deadleaf Arts, a weapon that allows you to use martial arts, as well as Dane’s Hat. He will also leave you a message of encouragement. You will have the opportunity to find other pieces of Warrior Monk equipment later.
