Benefits :

– Really excellent defensive stats and pretty decent attack stats

– 8 resistances and 1 immunity against 2 weaknesses

– Access to many synergistic abilities with his stats

– The Iron Thorn talent which makes him even more dangerous defensively

– Insensitivity to Poison and Vampigraine

Disadvantages:

– A completely crappy speed stat.

– A big danger against Fire type. (Sensitivity x4)

Special Staller (OR)
Noacier@ Remains
Talent: Iron thorn
Gyroballe (Steel)
Nature : Rude Mega Whip (Plant)
EV: HP 252 / Def. Special. 252 / Atk 4
Rock Trap (Rock)
IV: 31/31/31/x/31/0 Vampigraine (Plant)

Noacier’s role will be to be able to take as many hits as possible.

The Gyroball ability has the particularity of doing more damage depending on the Speed difference between the attacking Pokémon and the defensive Pokémon (the slower the attacking Pokémon, the higher the damage), hence the 0 IV in Speed as well as the Rude nature which lowers it. In addition, Gyroball, being stabbed, will do additional damage.

Mega Whip is there to do significant damage thanks to the stab, and allowing Noacier to take care of slower Pokémon or Water-Ground type Pokémon like Quagsire.

Stealth Rock punishes the opposing Pokémon’s switches, making them lose life each time an opponent enters the field. This ability does, by default, 1/8 of the opponent’s HP in damage and more if the Pokémon is sensitive to the Rock type. Thus, Talonflame, Charizard, Pyrax … will lose half of their life each time they switch.

Vampigraine makes the opponent lose 1/8 of life at the end of each turn, and heals your Pokémon by the same amount of HP. Having the Leftovers in addition provides an excellent Sustain.

At first glance, one might wonder why this Moveset features a Special Defense-based Ferrothorn since its Defense stat is higher than Special Defense. Ferrothorn has the Iron Thorn Ability that causes the attacking Pokémon to lose 1/8 of their HP if it makes a direct physical attack. This makes it dangerous against both physical and special Pokémon.

Viable modifications:

A Steelwing with a Physical Staller moveset remains completely viable, with an EV distribution of HP 252 / Def 252 / Atk 4 and the Relax nature.

You can also make a Hybrid Staller with 252 HP EVs and the rest in Defense and Special Defense distributed however you like.

It is common to have him hold the Brut Helmet which has the same property as Iron Thorn (but 1/6 of the HP). The accumulation of the two will therefore make the attacking Pokémon lose 7/24 of its HP in the event of a direct physical ability.

It is possible to replace Mega Whip with Toxic to do very heavy damage over time in addition to Vampigraine.

You can also go for a moveset with Shelter to be able to delay turns and take advantage of Leftovers, Vampigraine and Toxic. Also note the possibility of teaching him Root to give him additional sustain.

Noacier can learn the ability Thunderbolt Cage, which will probably not allow him to outspeed the opposing Pokémon, but which allows him to add a little support to his team.

Noacier can also have the ability Spikes which, like Stealth Rock, does damage if the opponent switches (unless the Pokémon is a Flying type or if it levitates). You can choose only one or combine both.

Finally, the last ability that could be useful to him is Curse. When used, it will increase attack and defense, and decrease speed. Thus, he will really hit hard with Gyroball, while offering an extra bit of resistance.

Useful in the team:

– Azumarill

Motisma Washer

– Scorvol

Examples of checks and counters:

– Simiabraz

– Heatran

– Vaututrice

Swords Dancer (OR)
Noacier@ Remains
Talent: Iron thorn
Gyroballe (Steel)
Nature : Brave Mega Whip (Plant)
EV: HP 252 / Atk 252 / Def. 4
Pietisol (Soil)
IV: 31/31/31/x/31/0 Blade Dance (Normal)

This set is quite particular on Noacier and is relatively little played. It is mainly played on the principle that Noacier is a big tank and can thus surprise the opponent. The best way to play it like this is to have a Pokémon in the team that has the Distortion ability, making the slowest Pokémon faster and vice versa.

So you have to use Distortion with a Pokémon, then switch to place with Noacier and make a few uses of Swords Dance. The Pokémon will be able to outspeed almost all possible opponents and will do really colossal damage with Gyroball. Mega Whip is there to take advantage of the stab and to do excellent damage.

Stomp can cover a few types that Gyroball and Megawhisk don’t.

Viable modifications:

You can replace Leftovers with Life Orb for extra damage. It is possible to teach it Shadow Claw, instead of Stomping, to cover other types.

Useful in the team:

– Flagadoss

– Suicune

Azumarill

Examples of checks and counters:

– Heatran

– Simiabraz

– Mega Charizard (X & Y)
