Like Elden Ring, Shadow of the Erdtree introduces many characters, each tied to a quest that is more or less difficult to complete. In addition to being profitable, these quests also have unexpected repercussions later on. Here’s everything you need to know about Freyja, a valiant warrior from Radahn, now following Miquella.
Initial position
The adventure begins in the Sepulchral Plain. You can talk to Freyja at the foot of the first Cross of Miquella in the North, in order to get to know each other. She promises you her help in combat, in the Belurat dungeon, a little further to the North-West. You can also talk to the Kérastien nearby.
Dancing Lion of the Divine Beast
When you reach the top of Belurat Dungeon, you will be able to see Freyja’s golden mark, in front of the boss door Dancing Lion of the Divine Beast. You can summon her to receive her help. She is a relatively effective tank, even if she tends to die before the boss. Her presence will also significantly increase the life of the dancing lion. You do not need to kill this boss with Freyja to progress in her quests.
Black Castle Seed Tank
Enter the Black Castle through the main entrance, then confront the majestic Golden Hippopotamus. Make your way to the second elevator, in order to enter the main section, the Seed Tank. After the Faint Grace site on the ground floor, look for Ansbach in one of the small rooms at the back of the area. Remember his location, you will return there several times. But be careful if you find the Secret Rite Scroll in the area, do not give it to Ansbach until you have completed Freyja’s next quest, otherwise, he will disappear and you will then be stuck.
Freyja’s Questions in Ansbach
On the sixth floor of the Black Castle Seed Tank, you will hear Freyja complaining about not understanding an ancient text. Talk to her to learn more. She regrets not consulting Ansbach on the matter.
Return to the library to speak to Ansbach, to report Freyja’s questions. He will then give you a document for Freyja. You are now good to make one more round trip.
If you handed in the Secret Rite Scroll in Ansbach, chances are it’s already gone. In that case, Freyja’s quest will be stuck at this step.
By giving the document to Freyja, she will be so grateful that she will give you her Lion Shield. You will also learn more about Miquella’s plans, especially if you combine this information with that of the Secret Rite Scroll: he intends to bring Radahn back to life! This explains why you had to beat this boss before you could start the DLC.
You can go back to Ansbach afterwards, and give him the Secret Rite Scroll, if you haven’t already. When you reload the zone, both characters should disappear. You won’t see them again until near the end of the expansion.
If you don’t complete this quest, Freyja will eventually disappear after Messmer’s death, leaving her armor behind. This is advantageous in some ways, as it will make one of the upcoming fights easier. But you miss out on the opportunity to obtain the shield.
Boss Leda and her allies
Freyja has no further role to play in the story until near the very end. After defeating Messmer and opening the Shadow Tower, Leda will realize that you were never an ally of Miquella, on the contrary. A formidable fight awaits you, with Leda, Dane and all the other default companions on one side, which makes it absolutely brutal in this configuration.
But by completing the companions’ quests, you can rally them to your cause in some cases like Theollier, Ansbach or the Kérastien. We have not discovered a way to rally Freyja to our cause at the moment. It is possible that it does not exist. Ironically, it is by completing Freyja’s quest that she is present in the enemy team, she is even the first enemy that you will face. In return, after having won, Freyja will leave you her greatsword and her set of armor.
