With Elden Ring, FromSoftware takes itself a little less seriously, and a number of enemies, even bosses, are a little ridiculous. Like the lobsters. With the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, they decided they needed a humiliating way to kill us, while creating what could be considered an overpowered version of the Runic Bears, in terms of attacks.
Preparations
- You can reach level 8-10 of Blessings of the Shadow Realm by searching the early regions of the game well. If you really get stuck on this boss, coming back later is an option.
- There are no allies available in this fight, but a spirit summon is still possible. Andreas, Commander of the Black Knights available in one of the first dungeons, is a new summon from the DLC, which holds up extremely well once upgraded.
- This boss’ damage is physical only, using heavy armor, the Draconic Shield talisman, and other similar bonuses should help you.
Phase 1
As mentioned above, this fight feels very similar to the Runic Bears, although it’s obviously much more difficult. This means you’ll have to do your best to get on the boss’s flanks, and you’ll have to learn the hard way to dodge his attacks at the right time. Their timing is quite disconcerting, and they tend to come faster than they seem. Dodging as soon as you see the slightest attack animation start is usually the right approach.
- When the boss charges with its mouth open, it tries to chew you. You have to dodge sideways at the very last moment.
- We will also remember the leap forward of the Golden Hippopotamus, which is particularly sudden and fast, try not to let yourself be surprised.
The only obstacle present is the tower-like structure at the back of the room, with a recess on each side. It may be wise to lure the boss into the area, in order to use the tower as a barricade, if possible. He will be forced to go around it to attack you. This will prevent him from charging you directly, and during phase 2, it will also block the thorn jets.
Phase 2
At around 50% to 66% health, the boss will transform into a Giant Porcupine. The Golden Hippo’s attacks are even more abrupt, sudden, and painful during this phase. Managing to deal as much damage as possible before its transformation will help you greatly.
You have a moment to attack him, then you will have to run, since deadly thorns will rain down on you. It seems that being very close to the boss, or even in his textures, partially protects you from the thorns, but it seems a bit random, and therefore very dangerous. When the thorns are raining down, the best thing to do is to run. Please note that he can use this ability multiple times in a row.
In addition to the rain of thorns, the boss has three new attacks:
- A high jump, he will then crash into you, inflicting devastating damage.
- A sideways skid during which he will throw thorns all around him. You have to dodge or block, not just run.
- Like the Sheep or the Noble Sanctechair, the Hippo will form a ball before rolling around the area, trying to crush you. It starts this ability with a jump as well, so be careful. Getting to the sides and turning with it should protect you, since it can’t turn quickly.
Awards
No Major Rune or Memory (Nobody wants to remember that stuff?), but you will unlock theAppearance of the crucible : thornsto mimic Golden Hippopotamus by shooting needles everywhere. This is great for an exotic build. You will also receive 2 Splinters of the Occult Tree.
