Iran will launch a CBDC pilot this June

According to Iran’s central bank, the public implementation of the digital rial on the island of Kish is an extension of the pilot program that started in 2023. In this pilot, bank customers and tourists can use digital rial for paying for goods and services through scanning barcodes using special software. Digital Rial offers an additional payment method besides cash and bank cards.

The CBI noted that the digital rial does not require interbank payments to transfer funds between buyers and sellers, and funds will be sent immediately once the transfer is complete. The Central Bank of Iran also said that this payment method is much easier than regular card payments and also enhances payment security.
