Like all FromSoftware games, Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree is full of items of questionable usefulness, which have an unforeseen role to play in various quests.
Usefulness of Irises
Irises can be used like common Runic Bows, with a subtlety. The Iris of Grace will therefore activate as a Major Rune. The Iris of Occultation will also activate it, but in exchange for all your runes. Suffice to say that it is better to use it after being dead.
That being said, you’d better save your Irises to complete Jolàn’s quest, and Queelign’s quest, since they are available in very limited quantities in each game.
- L’Iris of grace will each time grant you Spirit Summoning Ashes, in the image of the corresponding NPC.
- The Ioccultation laugh will allow you to pick up their unique weapon.
It’s up to you to decide which you prefer. Since these choices are mutually exclusive, this also means that you will need to perform them a second time in New Game Plus mode, in order to unlock all the rewards on the same character.

Position of the Iris of Grace
There are only 2 Irises of Grace in the game, here’s where to find them:
- In the West section of Black Castle, after going through the door to the left of the Specimen Warehouse. The Iris of Grace is in a large room, below the balcony on which you will find the fearsome Ashes of War Shining Wall.
- Still in the Black Castle, but by taking the East entrance and emptying the water from the flooded religious district. You will find the Iris of Grace in the main room of the church, in front of the statue of Marika, before the Avatar of the Occult Tree.
Position of the Occultation Iris
Similarly, there are only 2 Occultation Irises available in-game:
- The first is obtained in the mass grave under the Strong from the reprimandin Altus Occulte. When you are in the courtyard of the fort, jump into the hole on the left. You will have to kill a fearsome Forsaken Slayer.
- The second Iris of Occultation is given to you after draining the water from the flooded religious district in the Black Castle. As you descend into the area previously under water, you will come across two Ulcerated Putrid Tree Spirits, one at the central tree, the other in the church at the back of the area, near the crabs. It is the second one that will give you the Iris.
