One of the first mysteries of Once Human players concerns an element quite common to games originally created for a mainly English-speaking audience: the assignment of keyboard keys when you are French-speaking and you play on an AZERTY keyboard! In this guide we explain in detail how to play Once Human with an AZERTY keyboard.
How to play Once Human with an AZERTY keyboard?
The eternal conflict of French-speaking players who are new to a game designed for a predominantly English-speaking audience is making a comeback with the deployment of Once Human, of course! We are of course talking about assigning the keys of an AZERTY keyboard to a game designed for QWERTY keyboards. And the news on this subject is not very good, at least at the launch of the game on Wednesday, July 11, 2024.
Although it is possible to reassign most shortcuts to keys suitable for an AZERTY keyboard, there are some rather problematic conflicts with the keyboard style for which Once Human was designed. Indeed, if you reassign certain keys you will notice more or less quickly that others cannot be reassigned and conflict with the first ones.
This problem can be encountered with the Motorcycle Radio which is assigned by default to the W key, equivalent to our Z therefore, and which cannot be changed. Result: if you try to assign the Z to the motorcycle accelerator then you simply will not be able to move forward without assigning another key which is really not intuitive for someone used to the ZQSD keys to move. And it is not the only problem of this kind in Once Human!
Switching from an AZERTY to a QWERTY keyboard for Once Human
Unless you have nothing against the idea of not playing with the WASD keys as a means of movement, the easiest way to play Once Human with your usual keys is to switch your keyboard to QWERTY. Don’t panic, this is not complicated or even permanent: you can go back one or two clicks later, and even switch between these two keyboard styles at your convenience without having to change all your shortcuts!
Here’s how to switch from an AZERTY keyboard to a QWERTY keyboard on Windows 11:
- Open the menu To start up
- Select Settings
- Select Time and language
- Select Language and region
- In Preferred languages select Add a language
- Select English (United Kingdom) then Next
- Check what you want to install. By default, we recommend that you leave nothing checked.
- In Preferred languages select … next toEnglish (United Kingdom)
- Select Language options
- At the very bottom, in Keyboard installedclick on Add a keyboard
- Click on Extended English (UK)
Now all you have to do is press your Windows key + Space to open the Keyboard Layout menu. Hold down the Windows key, and each time you press Space while this menu is open you will go down one option at a time. Go down until you select English Extended “United Kingdom” and voila, your keyboard is now in QWERTY!
If you want to switch back to AZERTY, or later to QWERTY, you don’t need to repeat all these steps every time. Just press Windows + Space, hold down the Windows key and scroll with Space until you select the keyboard layout that suits you and you’re done. This will be very useful not only for playing Once Human, but also for a whole bunch of other games!
