Lord of the Rings: official news for the most ambitious game

There are plenty of games in the popular Lord of the Rings universe in the works, and the most ambitious of them is officially making headlines again.

In addition to the construction/survival game Return to Moria coming in October and the cute Tales of the Shire expected later this year, Amazon Games is working on a much more ambitious Lord of the Rings game: an MMO. CEO Christoph Hartmann gave some updates on the subject in an interview with IGN.

Amazon Games’ Lord of the Rings MMO Looks East

Last year, Amazon Games announced with great fanfare that it was working on an ambitious MMO in the Lord of the Rings universe, thus treading on the territory of The Lord of the Rings Online, released 17 years ago. After New World, the group intends to apply what it has learned in this massive genre to Tolkien’s famous Middle-earth. A colossal task, on which the developers seem to be seriously working.

We don’t want to do what’s already been done. Even if it’s tempting for an existing license, it’s useless. You have to find a new approach. I think we’re still at that stage where we’re looking for a good hook, which would make our game different from the others. So it’s too early for our Lord of the Rings MMO “, the CEO of Amazon Games told IGN.

Will this time be the right one?

As a reminder, Amazon Games had already started working on a Lord of the Rings MMO, only to abandon it in 2019, deeming it ” too complicated “, notably due to development carried out by a Hong Kong studio, since bought by the Chinese giant Tencent.

With the team strong in its experience on New World, this new draft could be promising (and in any case technically much more up to date than The Lord of the Rings Online), but patience is required to learn more. In the meantime, Prime Video will welcome from August 29 the season 2 of its series Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power. It remains to be seen if it will be more convincing than the first.
