After suffering through the various bosses in Shadow of the Erdtree, Metyr almost counts as a relaxing fight. Her attacks are relatively easy to see coming, and she doesn’t perform any long combos. Of course, this is still a pretty big fight, since she’s related to the Beast of Elden.
How to face Metyr?
Unlike other bosses, you will have to complete a series of quests before facing him, that of Ymir. You can consult our itineraries to know where to find him, and how to reach the different ruins requested. After accepting the third card from Ymir, reload the area of the Manus Metyr Cathedral. As its name suggests, this building is dedicated to Metyr. Inspect Ymir’s throne, in order to open a passage to the boss. You will have to blow into the bell before each attempt.
Preparations
- You can reach level 15 and above of Shadow Realm Blessings by collecting the Occult Tree Splinters, scattered throughout the DLC.
- As always, a spirit summon will help you greatly. If you don’t want to summon the Mimic, you can opt for a spirit that can attack from a distance.
- This boss’ damage is Physical and Magical. The Dragon Shield and Magic Dragon Talisman +3 will significantly help you reduce the damage taken. There are buffs and consumables that will also help you in this area.
- Metyr is vulnerable to the effects of Bleeding and ofFrostbite.
- During certain phases of the fight, the boss will levitate a few meters above the ground, making it impossible to attack in meleePlanning ahead with spells or projectiles, like Freezing Pots, can turn this into an opportunity to deal heavy damage and make the fight significantly easier.
Phase 1
The fight starts off rather smoothly, with a few very painful attacks, but relatively easy to avoid once you know them. Metyr usually starts the fight with one of these three attacks, she will then use them regularly:
Single laser : The boss’s eye glows for a moment, then an extremely fast laser hits your position. If you are far enough away, it is possible to avoid it by running sideways, but a roll or block is still a better option. Anti-spell abilities can also protect yourself from it if you have good timing.
Laser Barrage : The eye The boss’s focus will be longer, then a laser will sweep the area from right to left. It will also trigger explosions on the ground behind it. You can dodge it with a roll or a step back, when it passes over you.
Energy wave : The boss will concentrate before plunging his head into the ground to make pink streaks appear on the ground. After a few seconds, a wave of energy will emerge from the ground beneath the pink sections. This seems simple to dodge on the surface, and it often is, but there are some subtleties. It’s not a fan, with “safe” sections that get wider as you move away from the boss. In reality, the pink streaks on the ground get closer and meet up as you move too far back. This means that the safe sections between the streaks are reduced. If you were already far from the boss, moving forward may be a better way to find an area untouched by the wave. Of course, the best solution is to stay close to the ground or position yourself on its flanks, which allows you to attack it quietly during this entire animation.
Birth of hands : Metyr grabs his chest, before abruptly opening it in your direction. In addition to the painful splashes, several small hands will emerge. They are not very dangerous, but there is always a chance that they will attack you at the worst moment. Try to kill them with an area attack, if possible.
The Finger Mother has some pretty painful melee attacks:
- She loves to smash you with her head, she will usually follow up with 2 more attacks if she misses.
- Metyr can stand on its front legs, or even jump, before crushing you.
- If she attacks with her arms, be prepared for a fairly long combo of 3-4 attacks.
- Finally, if you are on her flanks, she will walk sideways, before attempting to attack you with her fingers.
Phase 2
Around 50 to 66% of life, things get serious, you should be used to it. Metyr will charge an energy ball at the end of his tail. A rather painful explosion will hit the area after a few moments, you have to move away or dodge at the right time. The boss adds a few more attacks to his repertoire.
Triple laser : Don’t expect to cross the single laser anymore, expect there to be two additional shots afterwards. Chain the rolls to not be transformed into a sieve.
Gravity Spinning Top : Metyr flies up, then starts spinning around. She will then launch herself at you like an oversized bayblade. You can avoid her by being very far away, or by managing your lateral movements well, but generally, a last-minute roll is your only option.
Microcosm cloud : The boss spawns flying bombs in a large area in front of her. They explode on contact, which isn’t very good for your skin. The best solution is to run away from the boss, so you don’t get caught in the area of effect when she detonates them all.
Double rotating laser : Finally, here is the only really hard ability to avoid from Metyr. It is likely to kill you quickly if you are not careful. The boss flies up, and the entire area below him is covered in deadly energy. You can’t get too close to him. The flying sphere will emit two huge rotating lasers that will sweep the area. They are too large to attempt a roll when they pass over you.
The solution is to carefully observe their position and direction before they pass. You will need to get as close as possible to the boss, so that the laser passes behind you, or do the opposite, by moving away to reach the edge. Consider that the lasers will actively try to pass over you, so quickly change sides each time. You can also try to move laterally to force the laser to pass you.
During this attack, the boss is immobile and vulnerable, after changing position to avoid a laser, time to use your ranged attacks.
Memory of the mother of fingers
As with other major bosses, you will obtain souvenirs to exchange at the Round Table for various rewards.
You have two items to choose from:
- Staff of the afterlife : A very interesting catalyst, since it allows you to cast both Sorceries and Incantations. However, it requires a high score in Intelligence and Faith to make it profitable. It may interest you as part of an Impenetrable Thorns Build.
- Scrutinizing finger : A colossal blunt weapon that deals magical damage.
