No, Qualcomm has not forgotten about ARM processors for mini PCs

A few weeks ago, Qualcomm presented the new generation of Snapdragon processors for both mobile phones and PCs, a second generation that, according to the company, will be a significant leap in performance compared to the current generation.

However, the development of both, despite sharing architecture, is being different. While the range of mobile processors Snapdragon 8 will use cores Oryon 2 CPUthese will not reach PC processors, since these will use Orion 3 with the Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X Plus.

New generation of CPU cores

Qualcomm’s second generation of Oryon cores are a 57% more efficient in terms of consumption and offers a 30% more performance. That represents a significant leap in terms of consumption and performance. However, PC processors will not receive this core architecture, but will use Oryon 3, as stated by the company in the presentation of the financial results for the last quarter.

Unfortunately, it has not quantified what the performance improvementneither in consumption nor in terms of performance. As for graphics, we more or less already know where the road is going. At the event held a few weeks ago and where the Snapdragon Elite, Qualcomm announced the launch of the second generation of Snapdragon Game Super Resolution (GSR)the scaling technology of the company equivalent to FSR from AMD and DLSS from NVIDIA.

This second version is now available so that all game developers can start using it in their titles. The graphics of the first generation of the Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X Plus processors left a very good taste in the mouth, for a first generation. Although it is not the best option to play with the highest graphic quality, the fact that such a light device with such low consumption is capable of moving triple AAA games at almost 60 FPS is very good news.

By 2025, Qualcomm plans to expand its range of laptops with ARM architecture with models under $1,000. The company’s plans include launching equipment for around $600 as a base price, a price that will undoubtedly make this new architecture available to many more people and will help it become a real alternative to the dominance of Intel and AMD.

Qualcomm does not forget about ARM for desktop PCs

Qualcomm launched a development kit in the form of a mini PC so that application developers can work directly on this architecture without having to resort to emulators, emulators that end up affecting the performance of the application, so the operation cannot be optimized 100%.

However, shortly after putting it on sale, it withdrew it from the market stating that it did not meet the quality standards that the company has established. Days before its withdrawal, one of the few users who acquired it, verified how its performance was the same as that of a laptop, since it consumed exactly the same, when it should be much more powerful since it should not have a consumption restriction. by being connected to the power and not being a portable device.

We will have to wait almost a year to see new desktop computers in mini PC format with the new range of Qualcomm Snapdragon X processors with Oryon 3 core architecture.
