On PS5 Pro, Fidelity and Performance modes are not about to disappear

Several games will keep the distinction between Fidelity and Performance on PS5 Pro, sometimes with greater freedom offered to players over the graphic quality of their games.

When the PS5 Pro was announced, the ambition of Marc Cerny, architect of the console, was clear: to offer players the image quality of the PS5’s Fidelity mode with the fluidity of its Performance mode at 60 FPS.

Since then, several studios have announced the graphic improvements possible thanks to the future Sony console. In addition to the Pro mode which brings together the best of both worlds, some developers choose to continue to offer two very distinct modes.

A choice which can still be confusing, but which ultimately gives players even more freedom.

Two Pro modes are better than one

This Friday, October 25, the Insomniac Games studio announced updates for its two flagship games, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart And Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The two titles published by Sony will benefit from the visual improvements offered by the power of the PS5 Pro, but will still offer two modes.

The first, Performance Pro, is actually the Pro mode that we will find in many games. It targets 60 frames per second while maintaining the graphic quality of Fidelity mode. It uses PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) upscaling technology for better rendering in 4K with ray tracing options.

The second is Fidelity Pro mode, which allows players to individually adjust the level of the different ray tracing options. Thus, the options related to reflections, ambient occlusion or shadows due to the sun can be deactivated or set to Medium or even High. The level of performance expected from this last mode will therefore depend on the choices of the player, who will also be able to see the details of the hair or the density of NPCs in certain improved areas.

If it targets 30 frames per second, it will be possible to reach 40 frames per second depending on the options chosen, taking advantage of the fluidity of the variable refresh (VRR) of your screen or television. If the PS5’s VRR normally deactivates below 48 FPS, Insomniac games offer a Low Framerate Compensation (LFC) feature allowing it to even run at 30 frames per second.

This choice is also offered by Alan Wake 2of which Pro mode will offer much higher image qualitywithout allowing ray tracing. The latter is reserved for the new Quality mode, which will also use PSSR.

If almost 3/4 of them prefer Performance mode according to Mark Cerny, having such a choice will bring the PS5 Pro closer to a PC experience for the most demanding players.
