A new innovation recently patented by Sony would allow players to access a timeline of their gaming session, offering the possibility of navigate their past gaming moments, bookmark them, relive them and even share them. A particularly useful feature for RPG enthusiasts wishing to replay important conversations or find the location of previously discovered objects.

According to the patent, spotted by Tech4Gamersthe most innovative aspect of this technology lies in the possibility of replaying your favorite moments, such as boss fights or memorable encounters. Sony acknowledges in the patent that “ accessing recent gameplay during a game is technically difficult ”, which suggests that this feature could be reserved for the future PlayStation 6 and its new generation of DualSense controller.

The PS6 DualSense should have a new button

This approach is reminiscent of Valve’s recent Steam Game Recording feature, available on PC and Steam Deck. Although current consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X already allow you to capture screenshots and short gameplay clips, recording more than 30 seconds of gameplay remains complex.

Interestingly, some games, notably the Forza Motorsport and F1 series, already offer limited rewind features. However, Sony’s proposal goes further by considering a universal function accessible via a dedicated button on the controller.

As always, we remind you that a patent does not guarantee the future commercialization of the technology. Sony has already filed numerous ambitious patents that have never seen the light of day, such as a summoning system inspired by Elden Ring or a controller capable of reproducing hot and cold sensations.
