Pokémon – Stats & Theorycraft

Basic statistics

Before going into details, it is important to understand what a statistic is and what it impacts in the Pokémon game universe.

A stat is a value that determines whether your Pokémon is strong or not on the level that concerns it. There exists 6 statistics visible and 2 hidden.

Life Points (HP)

HP determines your Pokémon’s ability to take the damage before falling KO. This statistic is the only one to appear. in combat in the form of a bar color variant depending on the number of PV remaining.

Maximum HP of the Pokémon Life bar color
< 50% of maximum HP Green
> 20% and ≤ 50% of maximum PV Orange
≤ 20% Red

– From 1G to 4G, a beep sound repeatedly was heard as long as the Pokémon had its red life bar.
– In 5G, the musical theme changed and the beep acted like a metronome on music.
– In 6G, there is only 4 consecutive beeps which will warn the player that their Pokémon is in bad shape.

Before 6Gthe repetition of this sound signal continued as long as the Pokémon was present on the field with 20% or less of his maximum HP.

In 1G, the color change was calculated in number of pixels remaining in the Pokémon’s HP bar. Thus, the bar became orange while there was still a maximum left 56% of life to the Pokémon.

Also note that the life bar influences the cry of the Pokémon, if it is less than 50% or if the Pokemon falls KOhis cry will be lowered a tone to illustrate the fact that he is not in good shape.

Appearance of life bars in different versions:

The Pokémon with the highest base Health is Blissey with 255 pointsThe one who has the least is Munja who has only 1 point base statistic. Munja is a special case, since he will never gain HP. At level 100, he will still only have one HP, offset by his special ability.

Munja Pokemon

The average base HP of all Pokémon is 68. The average base HP of all Pokémon’s final forms is 80.

The attack

Attack (called Strength in first generation) determines the damage what will your Pokemon do when it uses physical attacks (before any modifiers).

Mega Mewtwo X
The Pokémon with the highest base Attack is Mega Mewtwo X with 190 points. Those with the least are Ptiravi and Leveinard with 5 points.

The average base Attack of all Pokémon is 75. The average base Attack of all Pokémon’s final forms is 90.

The Defense

Defense determines your Pokémon’s natural ability to resist physical attacks.

Mega Steelix

The Pokémon with the highest base Defense are Caratroc, Mega Steelix, and Mega Aggron with 230 points. Those with the least are also Ptiravi and Leveinard with 5 points.

The average base Defense of all Pokémon is 70. The average base Defense of all Pokémon’s final forms is 83.

The Special

The Special is a statistic that only existed in first generation. Now obsolete, it grouped together Special Attack And Special Defense under a common value. It therefore determined both how much damage your Pokémon could inflict and take on the special plan. This quickly created balancing problems. A Pokémon strong in special offensive was also necessarily strong in defensive terms (for example Alakazam, Leveinard) and vice versa while the physical equivalent did not exist (Strength and Defense being two distinct statistics).

Psykokwak question

It was in the second generation that the decision was made to split the Special stat into two (some Pokémon lost out in the change). However, the IV And EV were they still common to both stats (if your Pokémon had 31 IV and 200 EV in Special Attack, it necessarily also had 31 IV and 200 EV in Special Defense since they were always grouped under the “Special” banner on this point).

It is therefore the third generation which will definitively draw a line under this Special stat by distinguishing between the two stats (Special Attack and Special Defense) and assigning them slotsIV and ofEV separated.

Special Attack

Special Attack determines the power your Pokémon’s natural ability when it uses special attacks.

Mega Mewtwo Y
The Pokémon with the highest base Special Attack is Mega Mewtwo Y with 194 pointsThose with the least are Caratroc, Manzaï and Barpau with 10 points.

The average base Special Attack of all Pokémon is 69. The average base Special Attack of all Pokémon’s final forms is 83.

Special Defense

Special Defense determines your Pokémon’s natural ability to resist special attacks.

Pokemon Caratroc

The Pokémon with the highest base Special Defense is Caratroc with 230 points. Those with the least are Deoxys (attack form), Carvanha, Toudoudou, Chenipan, Aspicot and Magikarp with 20 points.

The average base Special Defense of all Pokémon is 69. The average base Special Defense of all Pokémon’s final forms is 83.

Speed

Speed determines how speed Your Pokémon will be able to use a ability / trigger a special ability. A Pokémon with more Speed than its opponent will attack first (and activate a possible ability first). However, if both Pokémon have the same speedthis will then trigger a “Speed Tie” who will randomly choose a Pokémon that will strike first this tour.

If Primo-Kyogre and Primo-Groudon arrive on the field at the same time, and Primo-Kyogre is slower than his counterpart, his ability will take over since he will activate second.

There priority Attacks can also come into play and cause your or the opponent’s Pokémon to attack first regardless of its speed.

Deoxys speed form
The Pokémon with the highest base Speed is Deoxys (speed form) with 180 points. Those with the least are Caratroc and Goinfrex with only 5 points.

The average base Speed of all Pokémon is 66. The average base Speed of all Pokémon’s final forms is 78.

Hidden statistics

The Dodge

Evasion determines the chance your opponent has of hitting your Pokémon. At the start of the battle / when your Pokémon is sent into battle, it is 100% (i.e. 0% chance to dodge an attack).

Even though it has this function, dodging is therefore not really a “dodge score” as one might find in other games. Rather, it determines the chances that your opponent will touch yourather than your Pokémon dodging.

There are several ways to increase or decrease this statistic.

– If your Pokémon’s Evasion is lowered (e.g. via Sweet Scent), then it will be easier to hit.
– If your Pokémon’s Evasion is increased (for example via Reflect), it will be harder to hit since it will more easily dodge attacks launched against it.

Precision

Accuracy determines your Pokémon’s ability to touch your opponent. At the start of the battle / when your Pokémon is sent into battle, this is 100%. There are several ways to increase and decrease this statistic.

– If your Pokémon’s Accuracy is decreased (for example via Sand Blast), it will have less chance of hitting its opponent.
– If your Pokémon’s Accuracy increases (for example if it used Sharpen), it will have a greater chance of hitting its opponent.

Noctali uses Sand Blast

The (statistical) Accuracy is at dissociate of the precision of your abilities. These two values are quite different as the formula below will explain to you.

Formula for calculating the success of an attack

The probability of an attack hitting its target is as follows:

Probability of hitting with an attack

– PREcapacity represents the capacity accuracy used (for example 80% for Rock Blade, so you will need to note 0.8 as the value for this ability)

– PREattacker represents the precision (statistics) of the Pokémon that is attacking at the time it attacks. Raising your Accuracy by one level will give you a x1.5 multiplier.

– ESQdefenseur represents The Dodge of Pokemon defender. If your opponent has increased their Dodge by two steps, the multiplier will be 0.6.

Farfuret attacks Claw on Kaiminus

If Pre-success is greater than or equal to 1the attack will touch his target.
If Pre-success is less than 1,

This calculation will be applied for each target in a Duo or Trio match in the event that an ability (Original Wave type) hits multiple targets at the same time.
