Handling and ergonomics
Lighter and more compact than a Steam Deck, the ROG Ally offers appreciable gaming comfort thanks to its weight of only 608 g. Its futuristic design incorporates a classic button layout, inspired by the Xbox controller, with asymmetrical sticks, D-Pad, action buttons and analog triggers. The 4 function buttons, the customizable rear paddles and the well-placed speakers complete the package, designed for an optimal gaming experience.
On the connectivity side, the ROG Ally offers a micro-SD card slot, a Jack port, a USB-C port for charging and an XG Mobile port for an external graphics card. The 512 GB SSD ensures comfortable storage, and the curved handles guarantee a good grip.
Performance to be qualified, but convincing screen quality
The ROG Ally Z1, however, imposes compromises for recent and demanding games. You will often have to settle for 720p resolution and reduced graphics settings to achieve acceptable fluidity. Some very demanding titles could even be unplayable, illustrating the limits of the console compared to the Z1 Extreme, which is significantly more efficient.
Despite these constraints, the ROG Ally Z1 retains its main advantage: portability. It allows you to enjoy many games in situations where a home console or laptop PC would be impossible to use.
But where the ROG Ally is really impressive is the quality of its screen. Indeed, its real strong point lies in its 120 Hz panel. This high refresh rate improves fluidity, but necessarily impacts autonomy and will not be fully exploited with all games on this configuration. The brightness is sufficient for playing indoors and in the shade, but reflections on the glossy panel can be annoying in direct sunlight.
Finally, you will have understood, autonomy remains the Achilles heel of portable consoles, and the ROG Ally Z1 is no exception. Allow approximately 2h30 of play in Performance mode.
An interface designed for gaming, accessible to all
The ROG Ally Z1 offers an intuitive interface specially designed for the controller. Armory Crate SE software makes it easy to access your games and console features. All your PC games can be found in the blink of an eye via integrated platforms like Steam or the Epic Game Store.
Although some bugs related to Windows 11 may appear, the interface remains easy to use. The option key provides quick access to essential settings (brightness, resolution, etc.) and even a virtual keyboard.
As such, experienced gamers will appreciate the ability to customize console settings via Armory Crate, while novices will enjoy intuitive, hassle-free handling.
