TikTok is reportedly planning to add a new AI chatbot called Genie, which will target Western users. The viral video platform owned by ByteDance has filed to trademark the name “Genie” in the United States, suggesting that the company is planning to launch the chatbot soon.
According to report From Semafor, the new chatbot will provide users with a conversational interface that supports human-AI interaction.
“In May in the United States, the viral video app filed a trademark application for “Genie” for an AI chatbot software that, among other functions, will simulate conversations, facilitate interaction and communication between humans and AI, and generate human-like speech and language.”

The filing describes Genie as an app that enables and manages communication between humans and AI, a positive move in TikTok’s strategy to improve the AI aspect of the app and increase user engagement.
Unlike the previous “Tako” chatbox, which was launched in the Philippines and mainly provided users with links to related videos, Genie is rumored to have more features. Tako’s capabilities are limited to recommending content within the app and cannot answer detailed questions. Genie, on the other hand, is designed to be a more advanced utility, combining TikTok’s other AI features into one app.

Some potential improvements to Genie could include aspects of TikTok’s current AI solution, such as generative AI search. This is a feature on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, where users can type in questions or facts and receive automated responses. So by integrating similar features, Genie would help TikTok users discover and find the content they need not only within the app but also outside of it.
In addition to improved search capabilities, Genie is expected to integrate several other AI-based features currently in development, including TikTok’s “StreamVoice,” which mimics human speech, music composition, and AI-powered text-to-video. These tools will be integrated into a single chatbot, and ease of access to various AI-based services will be improved.
Additionally, TikTok is working on virtual avatars to create virtual characters that can conduct live broadcasts within the platform. This feature could be integrated into Genie, allowing users to interact with virtual humans and thus increase TikTok usage.
Genie is part of TikTok’s larger plan to become an AI pioneer in the social media space. While other platforms, such as Meta, have integrated AI chatbots into all of their apps, TikTok’s use seems to be more about utility for discovery. To make it easier for users to access and interact with its growing variety of AI features, TikTok plans to integrate them all into one chatbot. This is different from the AI tools available on other social media platforms, where the main output is a text summary or image generated from a text input.
