One widely-cited 2026 comparison found a seven-year-old CPU performing within margin of a brand-new one for GPU-resident inference, with the real gap coming from software, not silicon.

CPU choice matters far more for CPU-only or partial-offload inference, where a model doesn't fit entirely in VRAM — a different scenario from a dedicated-GPU gaming build.
