Web3 Foundation launches over $60 million in prizes for the Polkadot JAM upgrade

The Web3 Foundation has launched a reward fund of 10 million DOT, equivalent to over 60 million USD, to support the implementation of the anticipated Join-Accumulate Machine (JAM) upgrade in the Polkadot ecosystem.

On May 27, Polkadot founder Gavin Wood revealed that the project’s community approved the upgrade proposal with a near-unanimous vote.

Award for JAM implementer

The Foundation said the initiative aims to drive innovation and enhance the Polkadot ecosystem through diverse implementations of the JAM protocol, thereby enhancing network resilience.

The award encourages the creation of JAM versions in a variety of programming languages, including OCaml, Go, and Zig.

To qualify, participants must achieve specific milestones such as importing and generating blocks, meeting performance standards on Kusama and Polkadot, and passing security audits.

This initiative is designed to ensure the development of a decentralized network capable of handling diverse computing tasks.

Web3 Foundation said:

“JAM is a minimalist and evolutionary blockchain protocol, designed to improve data management and interoperability within the network. It will ensure that Polkadot continues to deliver the leading standard in security, flexibility and scalability of the block space.”

Furthermore, this upgrade introduces revolutionary scalability to the consensus layer, previously only achievable through rollups. This innovation eliminates the need for developers to choose between appchains and smart contracts.

JAM provides a flexible environment to ensure Layer 2 scalability without relying on roll-up solutions and meet the diverse needs of any application, the foundation said. They also added that JAM’s strong community support shows a willingness to embrace decentralized innovation while maintaining high standards.

While the upgrade rollout timeline is currently unknown, the rollout will proceed through five steps, including import, block creation, speed testing, and security testing.
