Windows PCs running on ARM architecture will soon be compatible with more x86 games and applications thanks to this major update.
To democratize the ARM architecture on Windows 11 24H2, Microsoft introduced the Prism emulation solution. This translation layer allows Copilot+ PCs to run a large part of existing x86 applications while awaiting native ARM compatibility.
However, it was still imperfect as several software programs simply could not run on the brand new chip from Qualcomm, but also those from Intel and AMD.
This should change with the new version of the Prism emulator which now supports a greater number of applications for ARM PCs.
x86 emulation improves on Windows 11
Microsoft has just deployed a new version of Windows 11 for Windows Insiders members (build 27744). This notably brings its share of improvements for Prism on Windows 11 24H2.
This update allows “ allows more 64-bit x86 (x64) applications to run under emulation by supporting more processor functions under emulation“.
More precisely, Prism supports new x86 instruction sets such as the very classic AVX and AVX2, but also BMI, FMA, and F16C. If many x86 applications could run without problem with the current version, this update is particularly beneficial for creative applications but also video games.
Adobe Premiere Pro 2025 can now be launched on a Copilot+ PC for Windows Insiders members and many games will now be able to run on ARM PCs, such as Starfield, Helldiverse 2 , Red Dead Redemption 2 or evenDeath Strandingall of which required the AVX extension.
Remember, however, that native ARM64 versions of these games and applications will in all cases display better performance. But this is a serious step forward for the ARM architecture on Windows.
