A cult film that inspired the greatest

Unless you are a particularly serious movie buff who has decided to watch even the oldest films, you have probably never seen The Seven Samurai. However, you have surely already heard of it at least once and for good reason: it is very regularly cited by the greatest directors as a fundamental inspiration. Originally released in December 1955, the filmAkira Kurosawa is today one of the most cult feature films in the history of cinema. As a reminder, the latter’s scenario takes place in feudal Japan at the end of the 16th century. A band of raiders then begin to attack a small village repeatedly, until seven masterless samurai decide to defend it.

Among the directors who were able to cite Kurosawa and the Seven Samurai as their major inspirations, we find for example Steven Spielberg (notably for the introductory scene of We have to save the soldier Ryan), Quentin Tarantino (The Bastard Eight), Clint Eastwood (Ruthless) or even George Lucas (Star Wars), to recite nobody else but them. Of course, Kurosawa’s cinema has not only inspired filmmakers since the recent video game Ghost of Tsushima is also a direct homage to this iconic director of the 20th century. Whether you have already seen this legendary film or not, you will be able to do so in good conditions thanks to its return to the cinema.

A triumphant return to cinema

Seventy years after its initial release, The Seven Samurai will soon return to French cinemas. From July 3, 2024, you will be able to discover or rediscover this masterpiece by Akira Kurosawa in a restored version never before seen on the big screen. Before that, it should also be presented in the section “Cannes Classics” of the Cannes Film Festival.

This re-release should allow many cinema fans to live this experience in the best possible conditions, a bit like what more and more cinema operators are doing by re-releasing certain classics. Thus, for several months, large companies like UGC for example have been offering a few special screenings during the week or on certain weekends dedicated to the screening of older films. An initiative that is perfect for new movie fans who have not yet had the opportunity to discover the greatest classics of international cinema and to the oldest who would like to be able to relive certain viewings in better conditions.
