A modder manages to add a second screen to the ASUS ROG Ally

However, it seems that for a user one screen is not enough and the design of the ROG Ally has been modified to add a second screen that folds on its back, offering a design very similar to the extinct one. Nintendo 3DS.

A ROG Ally with a Nintendo 3DS design

The modder YesltsKira has already published his latest project on HackADay, a project related to the ASUS ROG Ally and which shows us how he has managed to add a second folding screen and which he has called: ROG Ally 2nd Screen.

Taking into account that, as we have commented above, this console incorporates a USB-C output to send the signal to an external display, it does not seem like a complicated project, however, it is not as simple as it seems.

This user has used a 7 inch WIMAXIT screen with IPS panel and with a 1024×600 resolution which includes an HDMI cable. But, taking into account that the ASUS console lacks this port, it has adapted the cable to connect directly to the video output of the console.

In order to place the screen on the top and have it fold or unfold, instead of making holes in the console and using a hinge mechanism, YesltsKira has used a 3D printer to create a rear casing in which the screen and the mechanism to fold it are attached, eliminating the original casing of the screen and the rest of the connectivity options it offers in order to reduce its size as much as possible.

ROG Ally with 2nd screen

This way, if you ever get tired of this design, you can simply replace the case, remove the display cable connected to the ROG Ally’s video output, and that’s it.

If you want to carry out this project, although it really has very little use if we take into account that no PC game is capable of taking advantage of it, we just have to go through the page of the project on GitHub, where you can find links to the elements you used to carry out the project. In addition, there is also the design of the 3D parts based on the screen model you have used.

What to use it for?

Unlike games designed specifically for the Nintendo 3DS, we cannot find any titles on the market that work on two screens, so this project only serves to demonstrate both the imagination of this user and how easy it seems to be to modify the ROG. Ally.

The only use I can think of to use the second screen that this project shows us is to monitor the performance of the console without showing that information superimposed on the main screen, and making it easier to see visually.
