AMD RX 8000 Series graphics will bring big changes to Ray Tracing

Ray tracing technology was greeted by video game fans with a lot of skepticism and humor. Despite a fairly cold adoption, Ray Tracing is present in more and more games. amd also offers support for this technology with the cores Ray Acceleratorswhich would have been redesigned for the RX 8000 Series of RDNA4 architecture.

The big problem of Ray Tracing lies in the high computational cost. The amount of FPS that can be obtained with this technology is reduced by practically 50%. Hence, rescaling technologies have been developed to compensate for a large part of these losses.

Redesigned Ray Accelerators

NVIDIA for ray tracing technology has included in its graphics cards the so-called RT Cores. A type of nucleus whose only mission is to carry out the complex calculations of light impacting objects. AMD also includes specific cores for this task, which have been named Ray Acceleators.

You should know that AMD’s solution is “improvised” so to speak. They have followed NVIDIA in this regard and are still working on improving this type of cores. The problem is that Ray Tracing at AMD still depends a lot on Stream Processors, the other type of cores in the company’s GPUs.

RDNA2 (RX 6000 Series) were the company’s first GPUs with dedicated light tracing cores compatible with DirecX 12 Ultimate. RDNA 3 (RX 7000 Series) achieves a 50% performance improvement compared to the first version of this type of core. A very good evolution of the Ray Accelerators, but much more is needed to be able to compare to NVIDIA’s RT Cores.

According to information leaked by “Kepler L2”, the new GPUs of RDNA4 architecture (RX 8000 Series) will have completely redesigned Ray Accelerators. The idea would be that these cores already carry a large part of the weight of the Ray Tracing tasks, offloading the Stream Processors. Something that will improve the gaming experience with ray tracing technology.

Complementing the Ray Accelerators we have AMD FSR. This is the company’s rescaling technology to make up for the performance losses encountered with ray tracing.

@Kaizar24 RDNA3 RT was based on RDNA2 with some improvements. RDNA4 RT looks completely different.

Launch of the new RX 8000 Series

We do not have a date at this time for the launch of these new graphics cards. They will surely arrive by the end of the year, seeking to compete directly with the NVIDIA graphics that will be presented in that same period.

Before we could have some preview, since the company will be at Computex to be held at the beginning of next month. During the AMD Keynote, the presentation of the Zen5 architecture that will give life to the Ryzen 8000 Series and also the next generation of EPYC processors for servers and Data Centers is expected.

The question remains whether AMD will give any hint of RDNA4, although we hope so. The rumors we know about the company’s next graphics make us think that it will be a great product. It must be, since the RTX 50 Series aims to be a true monstrosity for video game lovers.
