Apple could collaborate with a well-known AI publisher to improve Siri

According to Mark Gurman, an analyst known for getting things right often enough, Apple would have entered into negotiations with OpenAI. It’s not new, but discussions would have intensified the last days. As a reminder, the Apple firm would indeed be ready to unveil new features powered by artificial intelligence for iOS 18. The major update should be announced during the Worldwide Developer Conference. The opening keynote of the event has already been assigned a date: you will have to be present on June 10 at 7 p.m. (Paris time). The show will then continue until June 14, in California and on YouTube.

The choice of OpenAI is not insignificant, since the company is today considered the leader in AI chatbots. You only need to look at the success of ChatGPT to understand it: the tool already has several hundred million users around the world. For comparison, Siri is now available on more than a billion activated iPhones. However, its performance is a notch below the competition, despite arriving on the market in 2011, when the iPhone 4S was released. This does not prevent some from integrating the voice assistant with ChatGPT via the Shortcuts app, despite everything.

What to expect ?

Apple has yet to officially reveal anything about the potential extent of its collaboration with OpenAI. Besides, the company could just as easily trust the competition, choosing instead the language model that powers Gemini (signed Google) to improve the artificial intelligence of iOS.

Beyond this unknown, however, we assume that Siri could fit in better with Messages, by being able to automatically complete sentences dictated orally when writing an SMS. The responses provided by the in-house voice assistant should also prove more effective than ever, particularly during conversations involving several interactions with it.

Siri should, moreover, not be the only app to benefit from improvements thanks to artificial intelligence. We thus assume that the sequence iWork will perhaps benefit from it too. Generative AI would then appear within Keynote, Pages or Numbers. In addition, Apple Music could allow you to create playlists automatically, according to your musical tastes. Finally, it is estimated that a whole new section of the App Store would be dedicated to applications powered by AI, echoing the category launched recently and bringing together third-party platforms intended for visionOS, the operating system of the Apple Vision Pro.

Some concerns even before the launch of Apple’s new AI

Until these rumors are eventually confirmed, Apple will have to deal with a relatively limited amount of time. And for good reason : the beta version of iOS 18 would be launched to the general public in July. To remedy this, the developer could, however, decide to only announce its new AI features for “later this year“, or even next year. This is common at Tim Cook’s company. Another reassuring element: OpenAI’s tools are efficient enough to deploy an algorithm very quickly, in just a few weeks. What’s more, Apple has tens of thousands of employees to achieve its goals, which is clearly not given to everyone.

In addition, let’s not forget that Apple has regularly convinced with the promise of respect for privacy on its iPhones, supposedly better than on Android. But the personal data collected by AI is a gold mine, and it is rumored that this could be transmitted to servers by Apple. In other words, your most sensitive information would not only be stored locally, on your iPhone.
