It’s hard to do anything more frustrating than a big spoiler when you’re particularly passionate about a story. Faced with this practice, some people are content to be purely disgusted… and others do not hesitate to come to blows. This is what happened to this person who attacked a work colleague after being spoiled.

Spoiling: an ancestral practice that is difficult to stop

Imagine. You are watching or reading the latest and most popular story of the moment. Its storyline is full of twists and turns and everything is based on the mystery of discovery. Each second viewed or page read brings its share of revelations, and you can already wait to find out what happens next, but you will have to wait until the end of the day to go home and do it. But a few hours after arriving at your workplace, during a simple conversation with your colleague, the latter does not pay attention and reveals to you precisely what will happen in the story that you had planned to discover a little later . Anger, frustration, disgust… This is precisely what we call a spoiler (from the English “to spoil”) in the world of storytellingand this can take on unimaginable proportions.

Whether you are a big consumer of series, books, manga or any other cultural product or not, you have certainly already been spoiled one day or another. If this practice is particularly annoying, it must be admitted that it is not always easy to escape it. If you watch the popular series, everyone will want to talk about it and you will have to update yourself as quickly as possible even if it means bordering on illegality, as fans of the series had to do. Game Of Thrones in the 2010s or fans of One Piece For example. If, on the other hand, you catch up with a work well after it has been published, everyone will assume that the rest of the world already knows the story and few people will take the slightest gloves off to discuss a few major plot elements. Every mention of the work in question on the internet or in any social circle then becomes a minefield that must be tiptoed through. Whatever your situation, spoilers are everywhere, and it is really extremely complex to avoid them.

The war of spoilers

When faced with a spoiler, not everyone necessarily reacts the same way. While some people are able to move on easily, others have to manage their frustration as best they can, and the result is not necessarily always pretty. Total and sudden disinterest in the work, insults, ultimate disgust… it’s quite easy to have a somewhat extreme response when a major element of a plot is revealed to us (voluntarily or not). But some people push the envelope a little too far and don’t hesitate to come to blows. In any case, this is what happened in this Japanese company.

According to the Japanese site mainichi.jp, a complaint was recently filed with the Kyoto police by a person following a spoiler story. Indeed, a man in his fifties working at the Kyoto district legal affairs office is suspected of having attacked one of his employees after the latter revealed elements of the plot of Oshi no Ko to him, a manga particularly popular in Japan. According to the complaint, the man grabbed his employee by the chest before kicking him in the waist. An incident report was received by police in Uji (the city in Kyoto province where the attack took place) and an investigation is currently underway.

For the most curious, know thatOshi no Ko is currently published weekly in the famous Weekly Young Jump in Japan. A French version has also been available since January 2020, and the manga has also been adapted into an animated version. The latter is also broadcast in streaming on DNA. The story is a seinen mixing drama, psychology, mystery and supernatural elements, all in an atmosphere directly linked to the world of music and cinema. The twists and turns are therefore particularly numerous and important, and the spoilers just as fatal. If you decide to give it a try, be careful what you say out loud or in public…
