How to replace Google Assistant with Copilot on Android? (Yes you can)

Microsoft’s Copilot assistant, previously called Bing Chat, is a very interesting application. In fact, this gives you free access to two technologies that the ChatGPT application reserves for paid users: the GPT-4 model and the DALL-E 3 image generator. Additionally, this technology is already available as a mobile application. Use its functionality in the main interface.

If you use Android, you can also replace Google Assistant, the default assistant on your smartphone, with Copilot. This feature is still in development and is only available in beta version. Therefore, if you want to replace Google Assistant with Microsoft Copilot, you must first install the beta version of this application.

How do I install the beta?

If you don’t yet have Copilot installed on your smartphone, simply go to the app’s page in the Play Store (search for Copilot) and sign up for the beta program (tap Sign Up).

After registering, you will need to wait a few minutes for the registration to complete.

You can then go back to the Copilot app on Android and check the app version number. The beta version of Copilot, which replaces Google Assistant, is version 27.9.420225014 (at the time of writing).

Once verification is complete, you can proceed with the installation.

How to replace Google Assistant?

If you have installed Copilot beta version 27.9.420225014 or later, you can now replace your smartphone’s default assistant with Microsoft’s assistant and take advantage of GPT-4 with ease.

To do this, you need to go to your smartphone Settings, Applications, Default Apps, Digital Assistant Apps. From there, you need to tap on “Default Digital Assistant App”.

Then simply select the Copilot application, which will usually appear among the options. However, it’s important to remember that the Android settings interface can vary from OS version to OS version and brand to brand.

Once this setup is complete, you can quickly access Copilot using the keys you would normally use to invoke Google Assistant. On my OnePlus 10 Pro, I press and hold the power button.

Unfortunately, at the time of this writing, Copilot’s integration with Android is not yet complete. Invoking Copilot returns you to the application’s home screen. And to enable voice input, you have to tap on the microphone icon. But we can hope that Microsoft is already working to provide an experience closer to what we might have with a real assistant for Android.

If not, you should also remember that OpenAI is reportedly working on a similar feature for its ChatGPT application for Android.

  • Microsoft wants to make the Copilot assistant accessible from anywhere, including Android smartphones.
  • The Redmond company already offers the Copilot application for Android and is currently testing a possible replacement for it.

  • To take advantage of this, you will need to install the beta version of Copilot for Android.
  • However, currently the integration of Copilot as an assistant on Android is not yet complete.
