AMD brought back the 4GB graphics card everyone agreed was dead — here's why

AMD launched the Radeon RX 9050 at $279 for the 8GB retail version, initially available only in Asia-Pacific, Japan and Latin America, with no US or European date announced.

A second, OEM-only 4GB variant runs on a 64-bit memory bus — half the width and roughly half the bandwidth of the retail 8GB card's 128-bit, 288GB/s configuration.

It's AMD's first 4GB desktop GPU since the RX 6400 in 2022, and it lands while Samsung and other memory makers raise DRAM and GDDR prices industry-wide.

Independent testing shows the RX 9050 running about 18-30% slower than Nvidia's RTX 5050 in games, but drawing roughly 16% less total system power.

Nvidia has raised RTX GPU prices three separate times in 2026, most recently by up to 30%, citing the same memory shortage AMD is quietly cutting corners around.
