Perplexity's Portable Computer runs its AI agent locally with zero per-task billing, launched August 25, 2026 for Linux, with Windows support coming in September.

Minimum hardware: an Nvidia RTX GPU with at least 24GB of VRAM (RTX 3090 or newer) — or Nvidia's dedicated DGX Spark mini desktop.

The DGX Spark itself now costs $4,699, up 18% since February 2026 because of the same memory shortage driving up consumer GPU prices.

Hybrid mode escalates hard tasks to a cloud frontier model for about $0.415 per task — Perplexity claims that recovers roughly three-fifths of frontier quality at two-thirds of pure cloud cost.

It only pays for itself if you're already running enough local AI workload to justify dedicated hardware; casual use is cheaper on a $20/month Pro plan.
