Why does DOOM work on almost anything?

This game is not known for being the best in history, but for being played anywhere. Over the years we have been able to see how DOOM has been executed in plenty from different devices. Such is the madness that they have executed it within the Windows notepad, a pregnancy test or a kitchen robot, among others. But how is this possible?

It’s not exactly unusual that every so often news breaks that someone has managed to run DOOM on a bizarre site. While you may think the main reason is that the game is too old, that’s partly true, but it’s not the right answer.

Wolfenstein is “to blame” for this phenomenon

It is the fault of this Wolfenstein 3Da game released by id Software in 1992. This fps game It changed history, achieving enormous popularity. This game was developed for MS-DOS, but the game’s developers found that bringing it to other platforms was excessively heavy and expensive. So they decided to make their next game more flexible in its code.

Shortly after, in 1993 id Software company launches DOOM, another FPS that completely breaks it. As they did not want to go through the ordeal of porting the game to other platforms again, in 1997 they decided to make public he source code of the game. Thus, anyone with the code could run it wherever they wanted.

This is how the “DOOM phenomenon” is born. The premise of this phenomenon is simple: play DOOM on any type of device. This is how we have seen this game run on all types of devices over the years. It has even been executed within other games.

What’s more, when a new device is launched, many developers compete to see who can get it working first. Thus we have been able to see it working on an Apple Watch shortly after being launched on the market or on the discontinued TouchBar of the MacBook Pro.

Basically, it’s something fun that helps developers get a little kick out of it. Some also do it to demonstrate their skills and make themselves known, as this is a global phenomenon.

Where does DOOM not work?

Well, it can work on literally any type of electronic device with a screen. It has been seen in ATMs, in iPod Nanos, in an old Sony phone when they were not smart. We have also seen it in a Porsche 911, a Lidl kitchen robot, on the screen of a printer, on an electric piano, on an oscilloscope or a pregnancy test.

In addition to all types of electronic devices, it has also been run on many other sites. We have seen it within Minecraft itself, being executed thanks to a mod in which computers can be added. In case it doesn’t seem crazy enough, they have managed to run DOOM inside DOOM itself.

Without a doubt the craziest thing has been running DOOM on bacteria. Well, this is a bit of a trick, as it is an experiment with E.coli bacteria in a dish. The interesting thing about this experiment is that the bacteria cells are transformed into a 32×48 biological screen in 1 bit. Fluorescent proteins are used to “paint” the bacteria.

Actually, the game has not been able to run, but rather it is a video of the game. Specifically, they have displayed the home screen of the game. The program is that generating this frame took 70 minutes, so to see the entire game we would have to wait about 600 years. But hey, it is interesting.
