Gothic, Gothic II and Gothic III are coming to PS5, Xbox and Switch 2 between July and November 2026 — the first official console release in the trilogy's 25-year history.
Gothic, the 2001 PC role-playing game infamous for letting an angry farmer beat you unconscious twenty minutes into a supposedly epic fantasy adventure, is finally coming to consoles — along with both its sequels — 25 years after it quietly shaped a strain of open-world RPG that Bethesda usually gets the credit for. THQ Nordic is releasing all three as "Classic" ports: Gothic Classic launched July 28, 2026 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S; Gothic II Complete Classic follows September 29; and Gothic III Classic closes the set November 24 with Nintendo Switch 2 added to the platform list.
Why Gothic mattered before Skyrim existed
Developer Piranha Bytes built the original trilogy between 2001 and 2006 around an unusually harsh, unscripted world: no waypoint markers holding your hand, factions that actually lock you out of content depending on who you side with, and an opening act designed to make you feel like the weakest thing in a prison colony rather than a chosen hero. It's frequently cited as a direct influence on Bethesda's Elder Scrolls games, particularly Oblivion's open structure — an odd irony, given that Oblivion has had far more cultural staying power than the trilogy it reportedly learned from.

Verdict
Worth it for curious newcomers
If you've only ever heard Gothic mentioned as "the game Bethesda fans cite as an influence," $30 for the original that started it is a fair price of entry — just go in expecting 2001-era jank and combat, not the polish of June's full remake.
Best for: RPG history buffs, Switch 2 owners short on meaty exclusives, anyone who bounced off a modern open-world RPG and wants the rougher original template
Has Gothic ever been on consoles before?
No — these THQ Nordic "Classic" releases mark the first official console versions of the original Gothic trilogy, which launched on PC between 2001 and 2006.
Is this the same as the Gothic Remake?
No. Alkimia Interactive's full ground-up Gothic 1 Remake, with modern combat and visuals, already released on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on June 5, 2026. These THQ Nordic releases are the original games, ported and patched for controllers, sold separately at a lower price.
Which consoles are getting Gothic III?
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, plus Nintendo Switch 2 — the only game in the trilogy confirmed for Switch 2 so far.
How much do the console versions cost?
Each entry carries an introductory price under €30 — Gothic Classic launched at $29.99.
Do I need to play them in order?
Yes, if you want the story to make sense — Gothic II and III both continue the first game's plot and player character directly.
Worth watching from here: whether Alkimia extends its remake project to Gothic II now that the original trilogy is proving there's console appetite for it, and whether Gothic and Gothic II eventually get their own Switch 2 ports the way Gothic III just did. THQ Nordic clearly thinks this IP has more left in it than a single remake — the real test is whether console players who never touched the PC originals agree.
