Retroid Pocket Duo vs AYN Thor: which dual-screen to buy

Two screens are back. After years of single-screen Android handhelds with DS games squeezed side by side, this autumn brought a whole wave of clamshells built around a DS-style layout. The question everyone's typing into Google is the same one I'd ask: Retroid's new Pocket Duo or AYN's Thor? I haven't had either in my hands, so this is the spec-sheet and price-sheet answer. Every number comes from the makers' own store pages, checked today, and I'll tell you where my reading is inference rather than fact.

The spec sheets, side by side

Retroid Pocket Duo vs AYN Thor: what actually differs

Here's how I read that. The Thor has the stronger chip. That's inference from the parts list, not a benchmark I ran: the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 was Qualcomm's 2023 flagship, while the Q-7790 is a newer mid-range design. If you want headroom for the demanding end of 3DS emulation, or systems beyond it, the Thor is the safer bet on paper. The Duo has the better second screen: 4.5 inches, AMOLED and 120Hz, against the Thor's 3.92 inches. For DS and 3DS, where the bottom screen is half the game, that matters. It's also $60 cheaper and ships with a newer Android version.

What I can't give you yet is a clean head-to-head of emulator performance. The Duo hasn't shipped, and I won't fill that gap with guesses. The one public demo so far is a Retroid-released gameplay video covered by Time Extension in September, which shows a Duo Lite running Mario Kart 7 in the Azahar 3DS emulator. It doesn't say which Duo Lite variant, and that matters, as the next section explains.

The Duo Lite is not a cheaper Duo

Where the others fit

• AYN Thor Lite ($259): the Thor's screens with an older Snapdragon 865 (Qualcomm's 2020 flagship). It's $10 under a Duo, and I'd take the Duo's newer chip and bigger bottom screen instead.
• Anbernic RG DS / RG DS Plus (from $94.99): cheap, DS-first clamshells on a Rockchip RK3568. The RG DS Plus runs Linux with 1GB of RAM. Whether they can handle 3DS is the question everyone asks, so it gets its own page: can the Anbernic RG DS play 3DS?
• AYANEO Pocket DS: the premium outlier, with a 7-inch 165Hz OLED top screen and a Snapdragon G3x Gen 2. It was crowdfunded, and Android Authority reported retail pricing starting around $559. It's a different price class from everything above.

Don't buy the Thor on Amazon at these prices

The Thor is on Amazon, but not from AYN. On 25 Sep 2026 the Thor Max 16GB/1TB was listed at $868.95 by a third-party seller (DX Global US), against $579 on AYN's own store. That's a $289.95 markup for the same device, in exchange for skipping a pre-order wait. Unless you need it this week, order from the maker. Retroid's Pocket Duo isn't sold on Amazon at all right now, so Retroid's store is the place to buy it.

My pick, by what you'll play

• Mostly DS, some 3DS, best screens for the money: Retroid Pocket Duo, $269.
• 3DS and beyond, want maximum headroom: AYN Thor Base ($329) or Pro ($409). Skip the Max unless you need 512GB or more of storage.
• Tight budget, still want 3DS a real shot: Duo Lite Plus, $219 (ships mid-November).
• DS and older only, cheapest: Duo Lite ($149) or Anbernic RG DS (from $94.99).
