Serious Sam is coming back to PS5 on August 31 and the twist is it's fighting itself

Serious Sam: Shatterverse drops multiple universes' worth of Sam into one co-op shooter — here's what's actually new and what isn't.

Serious Sam: Shatterverse launches August 31, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Devolver Digital and developer Behaviour Interactive just locked the date, and the twist is that Sam is now fighting alongside himself — the game splinters its hero across a fractured multiverse, so you team up with, and shoot next to, other versions of the same guy.

What Shatterverse actually is

Strip away the multiverse framing and Shatterverse is still recognizably Serious Sam: arcade-style first-person shooting, escalating destruction, and enemy waves that get more absurd the longer a run goes. What's new is the structure. It's built as a co-op roguelite — runs, not a single linear campaign — with a feature Devolver calls 'Mental's Horde, Remixed,' which reshuffles enemy encounters between attempts rather than repeating the same fixed gauntlet every time. The PS5 angle is the headline mainly because it's the platform that hasn't had a proper Serious Sam entry in years, but Shatterverse launches day-and-date on Xbox Series X|S too — worth noting given how far Xbox's own numbers have slipped against PlayStation and Nintendo lately, which makes every cross-platform release like this a slightly bigger deal than it used to be.

The multiverse gimmick, explained

The setup: reality has fractured, and you're part of a 'Serious Program' — a task force of Sams pulled from different universes — sent to finish fights that other versions of the hero couldn't. In practice, that's the game's excuse for co-op, and for why the roster and enemy mix can escalate run over run without breaking the fiction. It's a lighter, sillier framing than it needed to be, which honestly fits — Serious Sam has never been a series that took its plot seriously, and Shatterverse isn't pretending otherwise.

Where this fits in Serious Sam's history

Serious Sam, then and now

  1. 2001

Serious Sam: The First Encounter launches on PC, establishing the series' signature arcade-shooter chaos.

  2. Early-to-mid 2000s

The franchise expands onto consoles — the run PlayStation LifeStyle points to when calling this a series comeback.

  3. 2022

Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem, the last major entry, ships as an expandalone for the 2020 reboot.

  4. August 31, 2026

Serious Sam: Shatterverse launches on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC as a co-op roguelite spinoff.

Verdict

My take: promising shape, too early to buy in

I like this on paper. Serious Sam's chaos was always better with friends, and a roguelite structure gives a series that was starting to feel repetitive a real reason to run it more than once. What worries me is the missing price. Devolver's co-op roguelites have shipped anywhere from cheap early-access experiments to full $30-40 launches, and which one this is changes the pitch completely. I'd wishlist it, not preorder it, until a number actually shows up.

Best for: Longtime Serious Sam fans and co-op shooter groups looking for a weekly run — not solo players chasing a story campaign.

Should you care if you've never played Serious Sam

Probably, if 'dumb fun' is a genre you're into. Serious Sam has never been about tactics — it's about absurd enemy counts, big guns, and outrunning your own decisions. That identity should translate fine to newcomers dropping into Shatterverse cold, since the multiverse premise is really just a wrapper for 'grab three friends and see how long you last.' If you're stacking up what to actually play this month before spending anything new, it's also worth checking what just landed free on PS Plus.

When does Serious Sam: Shatterverse release?
August 31, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Is Serious Sam: Shatterverse a mainline game or a spinoff?
It's a spinoff. The story follows a 'Serious Program' of alternate-universe Sams, not a numbered entry in the main series.
How much does it cost?
Devolver Digital hasn't announced a price. The PlayStation Store listing is live for wishlisting, but preorders aren't open yet.
Is it co-op only, or can you play solo?
It's built around co-op, though the series has historically supported solo play too — Devolver hasn't detailed solo-specific balancing for this entry yet.
Who's developing it?
Behaviour Interactive, best known for Dead by Daylight, developing under publisher Devolver Digital.

Worth watching between now and launch: whether Devolver drops a price before August 31, and whether the roguelite runs stay fun on repeat or start feeling like padding — that's usually what separates a group's new regular Friday game from a week-one novelty. If you're tracking the broader 'bring back what disappeared' trend in gaming right now, Gothic's trilogy remaster and Patlabor: The Case Files are running the exact same playbook this month.
