Which console should you buy for GTA 6? (2026)

"Which PlayStation do I buy for GTA 6?" is the question of the month. The internet has plenty of confident answers, and most are built on leaks and wishful frame-rate guesses. So here's the version built only on what Rockstar, Sony and Microsoft have actually published, plus the prices I checked this morning. Where something isn't announced, I'll say so. That turns out to be the most useful thing on the page.

Every console that runs GTA 6, priced today

Store prices come from PlayStation Direct and the Xbox store. Amazon prices were checked with a US delivery address, and I've noted who's actually selling. The PS5 Pro line is the one to read twice: Sony's $899 unit was out of stock at PlayStation Direct, and the Amazon listing was a third-party seller at $1,299.49.

The disc-drive question has a surprisingly clean answer

Rockstar's pre-order announcement says the physical edition contains "a download code inside the box." Amazon's own listing reads "Code in Box, Delivers 11/12/26, Playable 11/19/26." So buying the boxed copy doesn't use your disc drive for GTA 6. You redeem a code and download it, the same as a digital purchase. For this game, the $50–100 extra for a PS5 with a disc drive buys you nothing. It only matters if you want to play other disc games or sell used games later.

PS5 or PS5 Pro?

GTA 6's PlayStation page carries the "PS5 Pro Enhanced" label. On its PS5 Pro page, Sony describes enhanced games as "enhanced with the power of PS5 Pro for improved visuals and performance," and lists the tools developers can use: advanced ray tracing, PSSR upscaling, higher frame rates. It also asterisks all of it, because each developer chooses what to use. Rockstar hasn't said which of those GTA 6 uses. So the honest summary is: the Pro version will be better in some way Rockstar hasn't described, at a price that's currently $899 if you can find one at Sony. Xbox Series X or Series S?

The Xbox Store lists GTA 6 as "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S" with a 19 November release, and nothing more specific. Microsoft says the Series S is digital-only ("console does not play physical discs"), which is fine here because the box is a code. What Rockstar hasn't said is how the Series S version differs from Series X. My pick, by situation

• You own nothing and want the cheapest new route: PS5 Digital Edition at $542.99 (Amazon.com), or Sony's certified refurbished Digital at $499 if you're fine with refurbished.
• You want the best version and can wait for stock: PS5 Pro at Sony's $899. Don't pay the $1,299.49 third-party price for enhancements Rockstar hasn't described.
• You're an Xbox household: Series X ($798.00 Amazon.com) if you want the headroom, or Series S ($498.00) on the understanding that its GTA 6 specifics aren't announced.
• You already own a PS5 or Series X|S: you're done. Pre-order the game ($79.99) and spend the difference elsewhere.
