Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition launches on Nintendo Switch 2 in 13 days — August 28 — for $79.99, bundling the base game, the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, and new Switch 2-exclusive content. A year ago, that release date looked like a mistake waiting to happen. The first public demo, shown at Gamescom 2025, struggled to hold 20 frames per second in open-world areas. The most recent hands-on preview says FromSoftware actually fixed it.

What's actually in the box

Tarnished Edition isn't new content wrapped around an old game — it's the full package. You get the original Elden Ring, the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion that shipped in 2024, plus Switch 2-specific additions: two new starting classes, four new armor sets each paired with a matching weapon, and new customization options for Torrent, your spectral steed. On other platforms, none of that requires a repurchase of the base game — Bandai Namco is selling the new content as a standalone add-on for existing PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and Steam owners on the same release day.

The demo that scared everyone

Go back to August 2025 and the outlook was rough. The playable Gamescom build dropped below 20fps in open-world areas like Limgrave, stuttered through combat that's supposed to be fluid by design, and shipped with almost no graphics options to trade visuals for performance. FromSoftware pulled the plug on a 2025 release entirely, saying only that it needed "time for performance adjustments" — without naming the technical cause.

Did the extra year actually fix it?

A more recent hands-on from Nintendo World Report, run on a newer build than the Gamescom demo, paints a very different picture. In docked mode, the reviewer called it "a smooth ride through and through," with visuals close to the PS5 version and only a slight step down. Frame drops still showed up — most noticeably around Storm Hill — but weren't described as burdensome. Pop-in was almost nonexistent. Handheld mode came back "perfectly serviceable," with the one real complaint being that darker, enclosed spaces like mines are genuinely harder to read on the smaller screen.

This had to be an improved version compared to what we saw coming out of Gamescom... frame drops were present but not to a burdensome extent.

Why this matters beyond one game

Switch 2 has spent its first year proving it can run AAA ports at all. Elden Ring is a genuine stress test — a 2022 open-world game with dense enemy density and no console-specific graphics settings to fall back on, built by a studio that had never shipped on Nintendo hardware before. It's landing in a month that's actually stacked for console gaming: PS Plus's August lineup added two genuinely strong games, the Gothic trilogy remaster is heading to consoles, and even Serious Sam is getting a new PS5 entry at the end of the month.

Elden Ring Switch 2: quick answers

What's the exact release date and price?
August 28, 2026, at $79.99 for the physical Game-Key Card edition on Nintendo Switch 2.
Do I need to already own Elden Ring to buy this?
No — Tarnished Edition includes the full base game and the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion in one package.
I already own Elden Ring on PS5 or Xbox. Do I need to rebuy it?
No. The new Tarnished Edition content sells separately as a lower-cost add-on pack on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and Steam.
Why was the Switch 2 version delayed a year?
FromSoftware cited the need for "performance adjustments" after an August 2025 demo ran below 20fps in open-world areas.
Is the performance actually fixed now?
A recent hands-on preview reported smooth docked-mode performance with only occasional frame drops — better than the 2025 demo, though not a guarantee of a flawless launch.

What to watch next: whether day-one reviews confirm what the PAX West preview build showed once the game is in millions of players' hands simultaneously, and whether Switch 2's next AAA test — whatever it turns out to be — gets an easier or harder road because of how this one landed.
