tech layoffs in 2026 have already beaten all of last year and it's only August

Over 125,000 tech workers have lost their jobs so far this year, more than the entirety of 2025, as Zillow, TikTok, Etsy and Google all announced cuts within days of each other.

Tech layoffs in 2026 have already beaten the entirety of 2025 — and the year still has almost five months left. One tracker cited by IBTimes UK puts the year-to-date total at 125,759 employees across 264 companies, against 122,606 across 278 companies for all of 2025. The clearest proof it isn't slowing: Zillow, TikTok, Etsy and Google all announced cuts within a single week in early August.

The week that pushed 2026 past 2025

Zillow CEO Jeremy Wacksman framed the company's 500-plus cuts as building 'a disciplined cost structure,' and explicitly denied AI was the driver. Etsy's CEO made the same denial about that company's roughly 220 cuts, calling it restructuring ahead of changes planned for 2027. TikTok's 250 layoffs are tied to closing its Nashville office entirely, with content moderation staff the hardest hit. None of these are small companies making a symbolic trim — they're publicly traded or venture-scale operations recalibrating headcount in the same seven-day window.

'It's not AI' is becoming the industry's favorite sentence

Where this actually lands, worker by worker

It's also happening as Meta open-sources AI models that undercut proprietary pricing entirely and as Nvidia pushes its own open models into the same territory. Every dollar an AI company saves on training and inference is a dollar some other company's headcount plan has to answer for eventually, even indirectly. The WARN Act requires 60 days' notice for mass layoffs in the US, which is why August announcements keep landing with September or October effective dates — Google's, Salesforce's and TikTok's cuts all follow that pattern.

The week, day by day

  1. Aug 4

Zillow CEO Jeremy Wacksman announces 500+ cuts, about 7% of the workforce.

  2. Aug 5

TikTok notifies 250 US employees as it closes its Nashville office; Etsy confirms roughly 220 cuts in Product and Engineering.

  3. Aug 5–6

Google files a WARN notice covering engineering, design and recruiting roles in Washington state, effective September–October.

  4. Ongoing

Salesforce's 133 cuts across San Francisco and Washington become effective in early October, tied to Agentforce, Mulesoft and Marketing Cloud realignment.

Is AI actually causing these layoffs?
Companies are near-unanimous in denying it publicly — Zillow and Etsy both said so explicitly. What's harder to deny is that AI-driven efficiency expectations are reshaping what 'disciplined cost structure' means to a board, even without a single job being directly automated.
Are 2026's layoffs really bigger than 2025's?
Yes, and it happened before August ended. One tracker cited by IBTimes UK puts 2026 at 125,759 jobs across 264 companies against 122,606 for all of 2025; a separate tracker cited by Crunchbase puts 2025's total closer to 127,000 — both agree 2026 has already caught up or passed it.
Which companies were hit hardest in this specific week?
By headcount: Zillow (500+), TikTok (250), Etsy (~220), Salesforce (133) and Google (52+, WARN-filed).
Will this continue for the rest of 2026?
Nothing points to a slowdown. On the current pace, some trackers project the annual total landing near 210,000 by December 31.

Watch October — that's when the WARN-notice clock runs out on Google's, TikTok's and Salesforce's cuts simultaneously, and when the next round of Q3 earnings calls will show whether 'disciplined cost structure' becomes 2026's defining phrase or just this week's.
