I switched from Nvidia to AMD and the graphics card wasn't the surprising part

Everyone benchmarks FPS. Nobody warns you that Nvidia's own control panel is the thing you'll actually resent.

A How-To Geek reviewer swapped a decade of Nvidia GeForce cards for an AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT in early 2025, expecting the usual tradeoffs — maybe better rasterization per dollar, maybe worse ray tracing, maybe a rockier day-one driver. None of that turned out to be the story. The thing that surprised them every single day wasn't the silicon. It was the software sitting on top of it.

What actually surprised them

Undervolting and overclocking an Nvidia card has meant the same thing for a decade: download MSI Afterburner, or one of its rivals, because Nvidia's own software has never built the controls in. On the RX 9070 XT, they're native. 'All I have to do is click Performance, open the Tuning tab, and enable a Custom tuning preset,' the reviewer wrote — full per-game overclock and undervolt profiles plus custom fan curves, no third-party download, no extra background process fighting for the same GPU counters. It's a small thing that turns into a daily thing, because tuning software is exactly the kind of tool you touch constantly and resent every time it's clunky.

That table undersells how recent Nvidia's fix actually is. Nvidia users had to bounce between the old NVIDIA Control Panel and the newer NVIDIA app for basic settings until May 2026 — nearly two years after the Nvidia app first shipped — when Nvidia finally retired the Control Panel and folded everything into one place. AMD consolidated into Adrenalin years earlier, around the same stretch of time the RX 9070 XT started showing up in real deals below its own MSRP. For most of this card's life so far, Radeon owners had one settings app while GeForce owners had two.

It's not just tuning — AMD's been shipping quietly good stuff

  • FSR 4.1 upscaling now runs on RX 7000-series cards, and reportedly even RX 6000 cards — a free upgrade with no new GPU required.
  • FSR Override lets you force FSR 3.1 onto any DX12 game with existing FSR 3.1 support at the driver level, instead of waiting on a developer patch.
  • Advanced Shader Delivery, a Microsoft feature, is live across every RDNA generation including old RX 5000 and RX 6000 cards — AMD shipped it before Nvidia did, and it's cut shader-compile stutter dramatically (one cited example: Forza Horizon 6 load times dropping from 90 seconds to a few seconds).
  • An AMD-built AI bundle installs PyTorch, ComfyUI, Ollama, LM Studio and Amuse in one pass, which matters if you're setting up local AI on a Radeon card instead of hunting down five separate installers.

Where this actually matters for a buying decision

None of this changes the raw math on whether the RX 9070 XT beats a 5070 Ti for local AI workloads — VRAM, ROCm software maturity and raw compute still decide that argument card-by-card. But if you're a gamer choosing between two similarly priced options and shopping mainly on frame rate, the software layer is the part reviews rarely score. Undervolting isn't a niche hobbyist feature anymore, either — dropping power limits on a GPU running local AI models can cut 20% of the wattage for about 1% less speed, and that's a far easier experiment to run when the slider already lives in the app you have open.
