AMD had a GPU price hike ready for months. it just waited for Nvidia to go first

AMD just told its board partners to expect Radeon and memory-kit prices to climb at least 10% starting this month, part of a planned 10-15% increase for the rest of 2026. That much lines up with what's already happening across the GPU market. What's more interesting is the timing: multiple outlets reporting on AMD's internal briefings say the company finalized this price increase weeks ago and deliberately sat on it, waiting to see whether Nvidia would move first and absorb the initial round of consumer anger. Nvidia raised its own GeForce kit prices in recent weeks. Almost immediately after, AMD's notice went out to partners.

The actual cause isn't corporate greed. It's memory

Both companies are pointing at the same root problem, and it checks out: GDDR6 spot prices have roughly tripled since late 2025, climbing from about $2.50 per gigabyte to around $7.50, as AI data centers eat an ever-larger share of global memory production. A graphics card's memory kit, the actual GDDR chips soldered to the board, has gone from a minor cost to one of the biggest line items in building a GPU. That's exactly why cards with more VRAM get hit hardest: a 16GB Radeon RX 9070 XT needs roughly twice the memory chips of an 8GB card, so it absorbs roughly twice the increase. It's the same chip-shortage thread this site has tracked since Nvidia's own kit prices started climbing, and nothing about it is slowing down.

None of this is AMD's first move this year, either. ASUS quietly raised its own RX 9070 XT prices by as much as 17.5% back in April, before AMD's board-level hike even happened — the Prime OC model went from $799.99 to $939.99 in ASUS's own store. That was one partner reacting early to memory costs on its own initiative. What's happening now is different: AMD setting the wholesale price for every partner at once, which turns those April-style increases into the new floor, not the ceiling.

Was this actually a waiting game?

The honest complication for shoppers: a kit price increase doesn't map one-to-one onto what you pay at checkout. Coolers, PCBs, and existing retailer inventory all factor in, which is why some stores are still selling pre-hike stock at old prices while others have already moved. If you've been on the fence about whether to buy a GPU before prices climb further, this is the second confirmed hike in three months, from the second of only two vendors that make the chips at all. That isn't a pattern that reverses itself on its own.
